Just saw the commercial. The actor on the commercial was an African American woman talking about how the government was giving us checks to "help the economy" and that Wal Mart would cash these checks for free. Obviously, it's a play to get the checks spent at Wal Mart. In case you don't want to spend them there, you can buy a prepaid Visa card at Wal Mart--with a waived fee. Either way, Wal Mart is greatly increasing its chances of getting the rebates.

1. Well, nobody ever accused WalMart of being a stupid business enterprise.
Other business are doing similar things.

7. I don't plan to.
That's why I do my business at that newfangled thing called a bank.

9. Aren't you lucky you can do that. Are you aware there are many POOR people who can't?
Who have to PAY for one of those check cashing services?

Did you know that?

So, rather than imply that some people are dumb... you know, and you are much smarter, maybe think about what you have, and be grateful for it, and care about what others DON"T have.

5. Good for them! It saves many poor people having to PAY to cash their checks!
Whatever helps poor people, is a good thing.

8. You know, I hadn't thought of that. You make a good point.
As long as one can resist the urge to shop. My fear is that the impulse items will be right near where you can cash your checks.

10. Thank you. Even the devil does something right once in a while.

I thank you for being willing to hear this. We MUST begin to actually think first of how poor people are affected by things.

For instance, WalMart started the $4 prescriptions, and now lots of other stores are doing the same. That was helpful to many.

"My fear is that the impulse items will be right near where you can cash your checks."

Even so, is that worse than one of those check cashing rip-offs taking 1/3 or so of your check????

Really, at some point we must trust that poor folk aren't any worse than the rest of us at handling their money.
