Obama / Schweitzer 08? I like it.
Edited on Wed May-14-08 02:04 PM by Truth2Tell
Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer wears bolo ties. Not only that he took a progressive/left message and successfully framed it into a winning bid for Governor of a right-leaning red state. He would balance Obama in many ways. And he's for real - he has passion and he speaks the truth.

I disagree with Schweitzer on some stuff, like guns, but we're not gonna get a perfect VP candidate. In fact, I suspect we'll be lucky just to avoid some milquetoast DLC garbage Governor. I think Schweitzer could bring the same balance to the ticket as the usual "centrist" suspects being bandied about - but without the DLC garbage bags.

Obama / Schweitzer 08 - I even like the sound of it.

1. Yeah, two relative unknowns, neither with many years of experience. No thanks.
Obama needs someone who's been around the block.

5. Joe Biden, Jack Reed, Jim Webb, Chuck Hagel--those are my top four.
Solid, safe, well-known white guys with a lot of qualifications and years of tackling national issues. No women, no minorities. There is a point to where it's foolish to risk the nomination to try to make a social-engineering point--Obama himself will be, sadly, a stretch enough for many people (we see that now).

7. Is the idea to water down
the "change" message as much as possible?

Biden - no red state cred, and some baggage that wasn't fully explored in his own bid.

Reed - there's some of that milquetoast DLC garbage I was talking about.

Webb - fine, but no more experience than Schweitzer.

Hagel - fine too, but the stars would need to align and I don't think he'd really do it.

You are sadly right about no women or minorities.

12. Schweitzer has a future, I like him, but there is a risk to running two relatively
young unknowns when we are at war in two countries, the Middle East is volatile, and the economy is going down the shitter. I trust Obama 100%, he's about the only guy with his level of experience and age that could have won my confidence in his abilities during these perilous times. But two relative newbies on one ticket just starts to strain that "change" thing a little too far. For psychological reasons, I really think Obama will get more votes if he has a "tried and true" older, more seasoned person with him. Webb is new to the Senate, it's true, and I've argued against him as VP in the past for that reason--BUT, he has been around Washington a long time, has a lot of national security creds from his Navy Sec days, and has the right "no-bullshit", tough-guy, centrist image to take on the GOP, so that's why he stays on my list.

15. I was a Clark supporter in 2004, actually. He lost me for good when he
implied that Obama wasn't "commander in chief" material while he was shilling for Hillary. I can't remember the quote, but it was the final straw. I also remember him as not being a very skilled politician, frankly. It didn't bother me at the time, but now I think we need a VP who is adept on the national stage, and knows all the GOP political tricks and can deal with them.

2. I could definitely see
them together. They would make a great team. They both are true dems but they are inclusive and see the need for real change.

3. He'd be an interesting choice no question
I am concerned about his willingness to take a backseat role? But he'd certainly bring a lot to the table.

10. What about Tim Kaine? He'd put VA in play ...
He's got a similar profile to Schweitzer, and when he stumped for
Obama in VA, I was surprised by what a good speaker/campaigner he
was.

11. I agree he's good.
Although there would be some Dems (especially around here) who would howl bloody murder about his soft positions on a woman's right to choose and the death penalty. Those are pretty sacrosanct issues in our Party.

14. As Obama has said, we can disagree w/o being disagreeable
and having someone on the ticket with those views might help make
inroads with those infamous "white working class voters" who are
culturally conservative.

16. I like what I heard from Schweitzer a month or so ago on the Thom Hartmann show.
But I don't think he's the right Veep for right now. Grandpa McLoon and the 'Pukes are going to make the debate all about "war and terra" because it's all they fucking have. McCain has admitted he doesn't know shit about the economy, and he sure can't run on the Chimp's record. So we have to go with the national security route on the Veep. Clark is the military guy. Richardson is the international diplomacy guy. It's probably going to be one of them.

A lot of people have speculated about a woman VP, but I can't think of any off the top of my head who fit that criteria. (Please God... nobody say Madeline "Killing all those Iraqi kids was worth it" Allbright :eyes: )
