John Edwards addresses Coulter's Hate

Shame on you Ann Coulter

Friday afternoon, Republican mouthpiece Ann Coulter brought hate-speech politics to a new low.

This video shows Coulter addressing the American Conservative Union's Political Action Conference, March, 2, 2007 in Washington, D.C.

We must show that inflaming prejudice to attack progressive leaders will only backfire...

:)

7. Fear not. Our constitution is elastic.
We are experiencing hard times to be sure, but a correction is inevitable. We just have to keep up the fight.

4. Interesting... and bold... idea:
Putting this up front. Most would have chosen to ignore it. Apparently Edwards and Co are looking looking to capitalize on it.

Frankly, that's impressive.

Re. poor Ms. Coulter: she closes out by saying she'll take questions. Hard to believe none of the questions related to the Edwards remark. I wonder if there's any video of that somewhere.

And yes, sweetness, you DO need help. I'm not sure it's *rehab* , exactly, though it's probably significant that you say that yourself.

5. This is an example of Republican "humor"...
for the most part, Republicans are dry, humorless, anally retentive sticks in the mud. This is the only type of "humor" they understand. Making fun of other people because of their sexual orientation, race, social economic standing, intelligence, physical appearance etc. is FUNNY to them. Other forms of humor are lost on them.

To conservatives this is just another day at the office: typical conservative humor and they see absolutely nothing wrong or hateful about it.

As human beings, we Democrats just don't get "the joke". To them, it makes perfect sense.

10. I like the idea of Coulter Cash - I don't have $100 I can donate though - EDITED:

I say we fight. Help us raise $100,000 in "Coulter Cash" this week to show every would-be Republican mouthpiece that their bigoted attacks will not intimidate this campaign. I just threw in 100 bucks. Will you join me? Just click here.

Coulter's attack was no accident. It happened on national television at one of the year's biggest conservative conferences. Dick Cheney and most of the Republican candidates were in the audience. She was even introduced by Mitt Romney.

John was singled out for a personal attack because the Republican establishment knows he poses the greatest threat to their power. Since they have nothing real to use against him, Coulter's resorting to the classic right-wing strategy of riling up hate to smear a progressive champion. And the Republican attack dogs will keep playing this despicable trick as long as they think it works.

But this time, you and I can change the game.

If we can raise $100,000 in "Coulter Cash" this week, we can show that bigotry will only backfire on those who use it. John is not the first progressive leader to face this kind of slime, but together, we can make sure he is one of the last.

Tonight, I've put in 100 bucks of "Coulter Cash" to get us started. Can you match me, or chip in whatever you can afford? Just click here:

12. Link isn't working for me. But I certainly hope his response focussed
more on the Republican leaders who shared the podium with her. Coulter is just a sort of court jester. Edwards should be demanding Mitt Romney, Cheney, etc. disavow themselves of Coulter's remarks publicly, and refrain from supporting her in the future.

And keep demanding it, until they apologize.

15. This Was A Premeditated Verbal Assault On Edwards
Edited on Sat Mar-03-07 11:31 AM by KharmaTrain
Coultergeist couldn't have gotten up in front of a major national Repugnican convention and launch a verbal assault on Edwards out of the clear blue. She could have used similar slurs for others (how long have the wingnuts been calling Hillary a "bull dyke??"), but singled out Edwards (and by association Elizabeth) for some reason. There's something the Edwards have done or stand for that prompted Coultergeist. I'm sure she didn't just do this out of thin air but had others to either encourage her or "sign off" on this sliming. In the past she's carried the water for Rove, Blackwell and other "merry pranksters"...and she still collects checks from Scaiffe, Murdoch and the usual right wing suspects.

EVERY Repugnican "candidate" should be constantly badgered about if they agree or denounce Colutergeist...just like the corporate media does when someone they label as a "librul" says something the right wing considers "untoward". Again, this wasn't blurbed at some private party or caught by accident on someone cellphone camera. This was a deliberate attack...premeditated against Edwards and aired LIVE on a national network...after most of the high profile candidates had bailed out, but in plenty of time for this slander to get plenty of TV airplay and right wing spinning all weekend.

Besides Coultergeist, any ideas who was behind this and why?

Elizabeth Edwards: Hate Words and Us

Posted by benny05 on Sat Mar-03-07 01:02 PM

Elizabeth Edwards just posted the following at John Edwards.com blog about Coulter and the message David Bonior sent out yesterday (as I referenced last night http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=3142726&mesg_id=3142726 ):

When Miss Coulter spoke about John at the conservative convention in Washington yesterday, she used a word that she intended as a nasty and derogatory suggestion. John and I have long ago shrugged off the vile words of this person. When she made a joke about the exact moment of death of Charlie Dean (Howard's brother and a schoolmate of mine), and when she attacked the courageous 9-11 widows, she told you all you need to know about what she is made of: her compassion -- or lack thereof. Now we need to find out you.

Although her words did not hurt us, they may have hurt some in the gay community. We are all sick and tired of anyone supporting or applauding or introducing hate words into the national dialogue, tired of people thinking that words that cause others pain are fair game. And we are sick and tired of people like Miss Coulter thinking that her use of loaded words about the homosexual community in this country is remotely humorous or appropriate.

John gave a graduation speech at NC State several years ago, and in it he said that none of us can stand by when words of bigotry and division are used. It is only when the rest of us stand up and say that this is not acceptable that we drum out the hate-mongers from amongst us. The first reaction in the room at the conservative convention yesterday was a gasp -- a horrified gasp, even -- but it did not last. In a few seconds, those who were not horrified started clapping and drowned out the gasps.

Now it is our turn to drown out the hate. Find a way -- whether it is contribution here that sends a message to Miss Coulter and those who applauded her (which, of course, I prefer) or whether it is a statement on this blog or others or all of the above -- but please find a way not to sit silent in acceptance. It doesn't change until we say we will not be silent when this happens.

To quote MLK (as referenced by John Edwards in a speech last month): Silence is Betrayal.
