I am guessing I should fill the hole, let it dry and use a wood screw on that side. Toggle bolts on the other side. I am hanging a shelf.

My wall is plaster. I have on hand, mortar, Durabond 90, Spackling. I am concerned Durabond 90 may be too hard for a screw. Don't moratar and plaster share the same 3 ingredients?

2. Fill it with the Durabond that you have on hand.
Let it cure and drill a pilot hole for either a wood- or sheet-metal screw.

That's what I would do.

How much load will the shelf eventually bear?

4. Just a toaster, an aluminum stovetop espresso pot & a can opener...
I'm a DIYer latte liberal who even froths her own milk!

It's a hack Ikea "stainless steel" built-in undercabinet flourescent fixture made with Ikea brackets, some wood and covered with aluminum roof flashing.

8. Then just screw it right into the stud.
The bracket will cover the hole.

Goodness, this is beginning to sound like a sex thread.

5. If your shelf or shelf standard is big enough....
to cover the void visually, don't worry about putting anything back in the hole. Whatever you do is only going to be for visual, as opposed to structural, purposes. The screw into the stud is going to take care of the mechanical part of holding the shelf up. I can't imagine that once your shelf is up, a little spackling wouldn't fill any remaining void, and look the most natural to boot.

7. Is there any way you can move over or up and still use the stud?

9. If it were me, and I was putting my usual tonnage of books
or sound equipment on the shelf, I'd probably spackle the hole and redrill the right size to accept a screw either half an inch above it or below it.

You can fill the hole in the stud with plastic wood, but if you didn't drill a deep hole, it really doesn't need to be done.

I wouldn't expect plastic wood in a hole to hold a shelf with the kind of weight I generally put on them.

If, on the other hand, you stopped drilling as soon as you hit the stud, you can drill the stud to accept the wood screw, hang the shelf, and not bother spackling the hole until you decide to move and have to repair the wall.

11. Fill the hole with toothpicks.
Then use a wood screw. I claim no special knowledge, but the toothpick trick has served me well on many occasions.

13. Always rewarding to find a good stud!
And I agree to just use it if you can..even if you have drilled too far into it, just move it up a little and then use a wood screw and the shelf support should still cover the unused hole. Using the stud even for one side willl provide stronger support too.
