Feud Fuels Bill O'Reilly's Blasts at GE
Source: Washington Post

Bill O'Reilly, the Fox News star, is mounting an extraordinary televised assault on the chief executive of General Electric, calling him a "pinhead" and a "despicable human being" who bears responsibility for the deaths of American soldiers in Iraq.

On the surface, O'Reilly's charges revolve around GE's history of doing business with Iran. But the attacks grow out of an increasingly bitter feud between O'Reilly and the company's high-profile subsidiary, NBC, one that has triggered back-channel discussions involving News Corp. owner Rupert Murdoch, Fox News Chairman Roger Ailes, NBC chief executive Jeff Zucker and General Electric's CEO, Jeffrey Immelt.

Ailes called Zucker on his cellphone last summer, clearly agitated over a slam against him by MSNBC host Keith Olbermann. According to sources familiar with the conversation, Ailes warned that if Olbermann didn't stop such attacks against Fox, he would unleash O'Reilly against NBC and would use the New York Post as well.

... The high-level appeals failed, and O'Reilly has escalated his criticism of GE in recent weeks, declaring, "If my child were killed in Iraq, I would blame the likes of Jeffrey Immelt."

... What began four years ago as a colorful feud between rival commentators, instigated by Olbermann as a way of drawing attention, has become a tale of bruised egos and secret maneuvering at the highest levels of two multinational giants.

1. If Murdock wants to trash the WSJ's brand and reduce it to the level of his GOP voice box FAUX
I say Bring it on. The more quickly he abandons any pretense at journalistic integrity the better.

3. Actually, Orally is kinda sorta right - but not for the right reasons
GE is a very slimy group and while I know little or nothing about Mr Immelt, if he was selected as the successor to that piece of shit Welsh, he probably deserves the contempt of all of us.

But billo doesn't give a rats ass about GE doing business with Iran. He'd support it if it were any other mega corporation. He just has his panties in a wad because Olbermann found an easy way to get under his skin and make him an object of ridicule.

Olbermann and the suits at MSNBC must be chortling at this article - on the front page of the post no less.

22. Not to mention the fact that the executives of GE
are a coven* of filthy war profiteers, who pro actively lobby our government for militarist policies.

Hmm. Which side should I pick, the war profiteers, or the vile, consummate propagandists, who manufacture support for war profiteering?

I can only wish they would destroy each other.

20. Cheney also does business with Iran through his channels - Khan,etc..
Edited on Mon May-19-08 08:21 AM by higher class
We are observing a hoax on U.S. citizens.

Don't believe for one moment the GE/NBC does not pass on White House positions and talking points to Olberman. If he doesn't deliver them, his guests do. Remember, Olberman is keeping his job, Donahue didn't. (There are other factors in his dismissal like Donahue being let go when corporate tv owners were pushing the summit on revenge through war type patriotism. In addition, Donahue was using some of his time to hit at the truth about related events in focused ways on for an hour straight with the threat of more honesty to come. Then there was religious right antagonism). They are both brave. I trust the one who got fired more because GE is not to be trusted.

Fox is the number one White House disseminator. GE is a nano-second behind Fox.
Fox doesn't sell oil, gas, and war machinery to Iran so they have a one-up on GE for hypocrisy - the hypocrisy of allowing guest after guest after host telling us how to hate Iran - right there with Cheney. FOX gets a clearance for the motivation factor of profiting off war with Iran through sales to them.

This all makes all the players look like naughty boys. However, words and actions coming out of their big bodies and what is involved for humanity on this earth if we bomb Iran and continue to kill our own kids, create monsters, torture, deny rights, deny benefits and maintain the hypocrisy of defending America when we are actually plundering is deplorable. This is their side entertainment to their big job of pushing more imperialism.

Funny, no women at all seem to be involved in this.

32. Kind of childish of the CEOs but not unexpected
It goes to show you the mentality that gets folks like that to the head of major corporations. However, in a major battle like this, I'd bet on GE with a market capitalization of 325 billion versus News Corp any day. I imagine that if these two egomaniacs get in a ding dong measuring contest, Immelt will crush Murdoch due to larger resources. I mean Repugs when faced with either their favorite propaganda mouth piece versus major money will always choose the money.

33. Related? the White House made a "formal request" of NBC to alter its news coverage:
http://thepage.time.com/letter-from-the-white-house-to-nbc-news/

The following is a letter from Counselor to the President Ed Gillespie to NBC News President Steve Capus:

Steve Capus
President, NBC News
30 Rockefeller Plaza
New York, N.Y. 10112

Mr. Capus:

This e-mail is to formally request that NBC Nightly News and The Today Show air for their viewers President Bush’s actual answer to correspondent Richard Engel’s question about Iran policy and “appeasement,” rather than the deceptively edited version of the President’s answer that was aired last night on the Nightly News and this morning on The Today Show.
