'Bush v. Chavez': The Coming War on Venezuela (Now in English!)
Eva Golinger's Bush v. Chavez
The Coming War on Venezuela

http://www.counterpunch.org/maher03242008.html

By GEORGE CICCARIELLO-MAHER

More than a year ago, I attended the official book release for the Venezuelan edition of Eva Golinger's Bush Versus Chávez, published by Monte Avila, and the book had previously been printed in Cuba by Editorial José Martí. I recount this to make the following point: long before the publication of Bush Versus Chávez in the current English-language edition, the book was already a crucial contribution to international debates regarding United States' efforts to destroy Venezuela's Bolivarian Revolution.

In choosing to publish the English edition of the book, Monthly Review Press has opened that debate to an entirely new audience, and for this we should be grateful. Furthermore, in an effort to streamline production, Monthly Review has further made the appendices to Bush Versus Chávez, largely composed of declassified or leaked documents, available publicly on its website, at the address: http://monthlyreview.org/bushvchavez.htm.

A New Toolbox

Golinger, a U.S.-born lawyer who has recently taken up full-time residence in Venezuela (and Venezuelan citizenship), first shot to prominence with her 2005 book The Chávez Code: Cracking U.S. Intervention in Venezuela. There, Golinger drew on a multitude of documents requested via the Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA) to thoroughly and convincingly document the role of the U.S. government in funding and sponsoring those Venezuelan opposition groups that participated in the undemocratic and illegal overthrow of Chávez in April 2002, most of which also signed the interim government's Carmona Decree which dissolved all constitutionally-sanctioned branches of Venezuelan power. All this against Condoleezza Rice's recent claim, patently preposterous, that "we've always had a good relationship with Venezuela."

In Bush Versus Chávez, Golinger continues this diabolical narrative, this time relying less on FOIA requests than on a series of other key documents and bits of testimony gleaned from anonymous sources. After the failed 2002 coup, Golinger documents how the United States changed its tack slightly, drawing upon the variety of experiences gained in the military overthrow of Salvador Allende in Chile and the electoral overthrow of the Nicaraguan Sandinistas. While it would be easy to say that this represented a "Nicaraguanization" of U.S. policy in the aftermath of the botched coup, in reality this new policy draws equally heavily on the many other elements that constituted the multifaceted war against Allende, and hence the thesis of the "Chileanization" of Venezuela remains all-too-relevant.

3. CHAVEZ: "everything broke to pieces." = THE REVOLUTION WILL NOT BE TELEVISED
Chávez blames Bush, not U.S.
Source: Orlando Sentinel - http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/nationworld/orl-hallstory1808may18,0,73926.story?track=rss

Speaking with U.S. newspaper editors, he says he wants to reach out to whoever is elected president in November.

CHAVEZ: "everything broke to pieces."

YEAH, an unsuccessful coup attempt by BUSH
no doubt. What a complete failure the Bush Junta is,
and a good thing that, when they try to overthrow a Democracy!!

Most of the posters have seen this numerous times, but perhaps some readers have not.

THE REVOLUTION WILL NOT BE TELEVISED - 74 min - Apr 23, 2006
KIM BARTLEY AND DONNACHA O'BRIAIN - www.chavezthefilm.com/index_ex.htm

IN SPANISH WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES HUGO CHAVEZ ELECTED PRESIDENT OF VENEZUELA IN 1998, IS A COLORFUL, UNPREDICTABLE FOLK HERO, beloved by his nation's working class and a tough-as-nails, quixotic opponent to the power structure that would see him deposed. Two independent filmmakers were inside the presidential palace on April 11, 2002, when he was forcibly removed from office. They were also present 48 hours later when, remarkably, he returned to power amid cheering aides. Their film records what was probably history's shortest-lived coup d'état. It's a unique document about political muscle and an extraordinary portrait of the man The Wall Street Journal credits with making Venezuela "Washington‚s biggest Latin American headache after the old standby, Cuba."

2. Bombing Iran, a coup or attack on Venezuela along with Iraq & Afghanistan will ensure havoc
Edited on Mon May-19-08 05:15 PM by GreenTea
and chaos before the November election, perhaps a little domestic controlled attack for good measure to create fear and panic, who knows? But,who among us thinks these republican fascist aren't capable of it or wouldn't want it in the name of corporate greed, world control, OIL and finalizing a stronghold for corporate fascism in America for decades to come....You think Bush/Cheney, the military, the multi-national corporations, the rich and the neocons wouldn't want this?

They certainly don't want their gutting of our Constitution and our rights & their other fascist deeds to be reversed, taking a chance and leaving it up to the American voters, who want & will make a democratic change if left alone in November. They know this, do we?

5. Could be, but I think that maybe the same plan they used prior to
Jimmy Carter could be in play. The next President will probably be a Democrat (McSame is sacrificial lamb) and is going to face massive economic troubles. The Bush Crime Family fucks things up royally, then gets voted out, then blames the certain results of their malfeasance, which takes a few years to metastasize, on the Democrat and then scream bloody murder that we gotta get some "shining city on a hill" capitalist genius like Jeb and Mitt, or Mitt and Jeb to "bring America back".

Same shit, different decade.

7. This looks so good! She is a fearless worker, the BEST.
DU'er magbana saw her speaking in Washington, D. C. at the same meeting where the following video was made a week or two ago:

Venezuela 101 - Eva Golinger
http://youtube.com/watch?v=4woOmGNiJZQ&feature=related

Parts 2, 3, 4 are accessible from the same You Tube site.

Very cool being able to read information gathered by an American-Venezuelan, (one parent from each country).

She goes such a distance in ferreting out and bringing people the information which has deliberately been withheld.

I'm really looking forward to this, too. Thanks for posting the links and the news about the book, leftchick. I think I've got to get it, too.

10. Will this happen before or after the "Attack on Iran"?
I figure it's time for another thread in GD stating that a source says we will attack Iran by "insert date here". There have been at least a dozen predictions of this sort, yet all of the dates have come and gone with no attack on Iran. It's akin those guys who stand on the street corner holding a big sign that says "The End Is Near!"

12. The threat is real - perhaps better to exaggerate than to ignore
I've noticed the serial production of predictions that an Iran attack was imminent, and at times find it laughable.

On the other hand, I remember people in 2002 who didn't really believe the US would invade Iraq.

The threats against Iran are constant, the propaganda as ridiculous and made-up as was the case with Iraq. The US has a track record of actually following through on such threads. You shouldn't just sneer at the predictions. They may all prove wrong, let's hope that; but they may also be drawing attention to a real threat.

As for Venezuela, the war was already declared and several offensives have been tried, most notably the coup attempt. So far, it's all been by covert means - but a secret war is still a war.
