Guidelines for the Gungeon?
Edited on Tue May-20-08 02:07 PM by SlipperySlope
I've got a meta-question about the gungeon. This might already be answered somewhere, so a link to other discussion would be welcomed.

Please; do not turn this question into a gun discussion, this is actually a DU policy question.

Question:
The Supreme Court is poised to make a Second Amendment ruling this summer that could potentially thrust guns back into the mainstream of the political discussion. Assume for a moment that gun control and gun rights become a major campaign issue for the 2008 General Election. If this were to happen, would the policy of moving this sort of discussion to the gungeon stay in place, or would these topics be likely to stay in GD (or wherever posted) because they were currently a topic of general public discussion and debate?

1. they usually stay in GD for a while, but get sent away when they degrade to the same old
pro gun vs anti gun debate.

I've seen a few discusions stay here for a couple of days

2. The same thing happens with religious topics...
They may start out in the Discussion Forum, but in a while they're moved to the religion forum. It can get ugly.

3. I forgot to mention Israel/Palestine....
Those also get moved out of GD pretty quickly, and for good reason.

4. You mean the "Gungeon".
The "Dungeon" is where 9/11 and conspiracy theory threads go.

6. I think that as long as the tone of discussion remains civil and considered...

...no topic should be relegated to a separate forum (but that's my opinion, not DU policy). However, some topics inspire passion that makes that difficult, and I think even more important some partisan DUers either cannot restrain themselves or deliberately seek to incite a riot as a means of controlling the discourse, leaving the mods little choice.

When I post in gun threads or I/P threads there are a few DUers who nearly always go off half cocked with condescending or insulting replies. I don't mean to suggest that I'm the particular target of this tactic, just that it is the default tactic for some DUers when discussing certain topics. It doesn't reflect well upon them, I don't think, but it nearly always affects the debate. If that sort of thing could be avoided, topics like guns and I/P wouldn't need their containment zones.

7. Insults can be outright or thinly veiled....
We can all tell when we're being insulted, though. It's best to keep contentious subjects, like gun control, religion, Israel and the Primaries in separate places.
