Coulter,Conservatism and the Critique by Morte.
Just to be clear about what the Coulter incident means: what she said isn't the issue. The issue is that lefty bloggers appear to be the only ones who understand the significance of the Coulter incident. The CPAC is a gathering of conservatives. It is a conference. It is essentially a statement about what it means to be a conservative in 2007. And based on the response of conservatives to Coulter at the conference, she must be one of the top spokespeople for conservatism. This is where the substance of her remarks matters. What she said, has said, and will continue to say is entirely negative. Coulter conservatism is about hatred, destruction and war. Nothing else. She doesn't make arguments, she identifies enemies and belittles them at best, threatens them with violence at worst. That in itself is bad enough but the real problem is that the mainstream media are silent about it. This is apparently "normal" for them and hence not news. They have failed to appreciate the shift in what it means to be a conservative in America. It isn't about limited government, low taxes, elevation of faith and military toughness, it is about Coulter conservatism. Conservative ideology has failed in practice and all that remains is ranting about "faggots."

1. The msm is silent because it is controlled by GE, Clear Channel, Sinclair
Broadcastin, and other rw hacks.

2. coulter - THE spokesperson of the republican party
CPAC - The Klan without sheets. If real conservatives aren't ashamed of this atrocity they do not deserve constitutional liberties; but as "conservatives" they will insist, nay whine, that such liberties are their god given right.

3. It's been that way for a long time..
now, for some reason, they're standing up and putting coulter's hateful face on it.

Next we'll we see mccain giving coulter a huggy like he did bush and then he'll be sharing his birthday cake with her.

4. Good reference, but some amplification is needed.
The news media has been cowed by the far right just as many Democratic candidates have been. Mainmedia has been bashed over and over again and are afraid of the right. Further, they have come to expect Coulter's "murder mouthing" (a 60's term) as par for the course for the GOP far right and no longer question it. What they do question are those attacked by the right; absolute perfection in the plans of the far right. And because the remnants of the liberal media have been bashed for so long, it is comfortable for them to not only ignore the usual hate-er-ation from the right but to go along with Democratic candidates who airily sniff that they are above the fray. In other words, the media have found a way to meld their cultural outlook with Democratic Party "leadership."

I've said it before and I'll say it again: ignore this incident and the far right WILL frame the debate and that frame will be set with a welding torch within a few days if the response is not universal and tough enough.
