A Little CREEPY? You Tell Me - Part of Naval Base Built in the Shape of a Swastika
Today my 8 year old son came into my office and said he found something really weird on Google Maps. He was looking at Coronado CA (we live in San Diego) and he found a Swastika made from buildings on part of a naval base. I opened up Google Maps, typed in Coronado and asked him where to look, he pointed out a portion of the island - I enlarged it and this is what I saw:

This is a military base and when seen from the air a swastika is OBVIOUS.

WTF is up with that?

7. First, this is old news.
Edited on Wed May-21-08 01:34 PM by evlbstrd
Second, the buildings aren't connected.
Third, the swastika has more history than just the symbol of the Nazis. Google it.
Fourth, isn't there more important stuff to worry about?

Edited for correct counting. I majored in art.

10. Okay boss
Thanks for sending me in the RIGHT direction. I wish I was as smart as you.

I know all about the symbolism of the swastika.

I find it a curious oddity.

8. We all know how much the U.S. Navy loves the Nazis.
That whole WWII thing was a whole big misunderstanding.

11. I think we beat this one to death several months ago.
Actually it was an interesting thread.
Some people said it had clearly nazi undertones, some said fer crying out loud it's 4 separate buildings and that the only way it looks like a swastika is from the air and if you ignore the big gaping hole in the center.

The most interesting comments were from a few people who pointed out that a pattern of L's like that provides an extremely efficient use of space, maximizing both window exposure, green space and cutting down on wind and probably why the architect chose the layout. (or something to that effect).

I say that's as much a swastika as the face on mars is a face.

18. Well, you *should* be sorry...
It's been brought up a brazillion times!

Donald Rumsfeld is giving the president his daily briefing. He concludes by saying: "Yesterday, 3 Brazilian soldiers were killed."

"OH NO!" the President exclaims. "That's terrible!"

His staff sits stunned at this display of emotion, nervously watching as the President sits, head in hands.

Finally, the President looks up and asks, "How many is a brazillion?"

16. You beat me to it. That design is to cheaply maximize window exposure
to all offices. There are much worst examples.
