Kristol: McCain may pick Lieberman as running mate

Neocon commentator Bill Kristol told the hosts of Fox & Friends on Wednesday that Sen. John McCain's vice-presidential pick could be a significant factor in the campaign.

"It's going to be a tough year for Republicans," Kristol stated. "He's got to run a bold and strong campaign, make an interesting VP pick."

"After seeing Joe Lieberman's speech Sunday night, I really wonder whether he will pick Joe Lieberman," continued Kristol. "Joe Lieberman or Bobby Jindal, the governor of Louisiana. Either a Democrat or a young guy."

Kristol has been pushing the idea of a McCain-Lieberman ticket for some time. He told a conservative Jewish audience in February that Lieberman "was McCain's preferred running mate," and in March, Kristol suggested, "Perhaps the most obvious way McCain could upend the normal dynamics of this year’s election would be a bold vice presidential choice. He could pick a hawkish and principled Democrat like Joe Lieberman."

Recently, Lieberman's name has appeared less often in vice-presidential speculations. Two weeks ago, Kristol wrote that "in separate conversations last week, no fewer than four McCain staffers and advisers mentioned as a possible vice-presidential pick the 36-year-old Louisiana governor, Bobby Jindal. They’re tempted by the idea of picking someone so young, with real accomplishments and a strong reformist streak."

However, in a recent Wall Street Journal op-ed, adapted from the speech to which Kristol referred, Lieberman strongly criticized the Democratic Party for not having "embrace the basic framework the president had advanced for the war on terror as our own."

"Sen. Obama stands in stark contrast to John McCain, who has shown the political courage throughout his career to do what he thinks is right – regardless of its popularity in his party or outside it," Lieberman wrote. "John also understands something else that too many Democrats seem to have become confused about lately – the difference between America's friends and America's enemies."

If he picks Joe, it might be just the thing to split their party forever. Nothing would make my laugh my ass off more than that. Well, I have been holding out for those Bush Jeff Gannon gay-hooker sex video to pop up on YouTube, but this would be a very good second.

11. Lieberman isn't a Dem, he's a neocon just like Kristol
Look no further than his prominent listing among other neocons (including Kristol) in the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies (new PNAC) bios -- he's a "distinguished advisor" along with Woolsey, Freeh and Gingrich:

24. Kristol is never correct. Just this week, he said
never has a candidate like Obama become the nominee after losing by large margins in several states. No mention of McCain. Who lost to Romney AND Huckabee by very large margins in several states. As usual, Kristol talks out of his ass. His usual audience isn't deft enough to know the man is never right. Never. Thank God we have Keith to call out these liars.
Remember, this is the guy who, back in the '70's, was all hot for "another Pearl Harbor" so the U.S. could colonize the Mideast. Well, he got one. 9-11 gave the neocons their wet dream.

Most of these guys are blow hards. They put out their theories and when after they are proved wrong by the facts, no one ever challenges them.

Every word uttered by McCain/Obama/Clinton are analyzed and critiqued. How about the same for the media people? How about all of their stupid predictions being recalled, replayed and analyzed?

23. From my mouth to the talking heads of Fox News
Here's the meme: Joe Lieberman's apparent swing to the right of recent years is nothing but a PLOY. A devious plot to curry the favor of John McCain, who will then nominate him as his running mate. Then, when President McCain no longer can continue in office, Joe Lieberman will become president. And, poof!, he'll snap back so far to the left that he'll make Cindy Sheehan look like Margaret Thatcher.

Joe Lieberman is a Manchurian Candidate who is trying to fool poor, old, helpless John McCain ... and America. Don't let it happen.

Up next on Fox and Friends ... your tuna salad may be killing you!

(Oh, please, I wish they'd pick up this meme. Please ... it's all yours.)

33. "...make an interesting VP pick."
Edited on Wed May-21-08 04:28 PM by Rob H.
There are a whole bunch of adjectives that could be applied to Joe Lieberman. "Interesting" is not one of them.

"He could pick a hawkish and principled Democrat like Joe Lieberman."

1. He is a hawk, so at least that part of the sentence is correct.

2. He is not principled.

3. For the brazillionth time, Lieberman is not a Democrat. He ran for office (and is registered as) an Independent and even though Kristol is a fucking moron who's wrong about almost everything almost all the time, I'd bet he knows at least that much and is deliberately lying when he calls Lieberman a Dem.

36. "...who has shown the political courage throughout his career to do what he thinks is right,,,"
The key word is "thinks." It happens that what he thinks is right is almost always wrong. And his judgment seems to be getting worse by the week.

However, that's a ticket I'd love to watch shuffle and trip and stumble and generally screw up everything they touch for as long as it takes them to cause upwards of 70 percent of voters to lose their lunches.

I can't imagine two more intrinsically loathsome candidates. I think even the thickest of American voters, excluding that 30 percent of religiously insane fundies who make things such a pain in the ass for the rest of us, will figure things out.

There's something about that look of the recently departed -- shared by both of these cadavers -- that's going to make a lot of people say: "You know, I'm feeling less racist all the time."

42. No. The religious right would not like it, and McCain needs their
vote far more than he needs the votes of any imagined disaffected Democrats.

Besides, if McCain chose Lieberman, he would be putting foreign policy issues in the forefront, and his record on those issues does not stand up to scrutiny. Besides, Bush's policy could be proven so wrong by November. He could choose Lieberman, but it would be his biggest mistake yet -- and to our benefit.

I don't think that Lieberman has much appeal to that famous "white working class" demographic. And Jindal or whatever his name is, you have to be kidding. He is another Dan Quayle. Huge mistake. But then, the Republicans are just a stump of a party. There is just nothing fresh or vital or green or growing in the Republican Party.
