Ok - so I should be happy about a war where my money is spent killing people, but you are wanting me to be upset over my money going to HELP some other people????

But for the grace of God I would be there - looking to sneak into another country to feed and cloth my kids. That's not being illegal, that's being a capitalist - because while they don't GO there they send their money to many countries to get a return on it.

When and investor does it we call that a good move and wise investment, when a person does it for their kids and family we call it illegal and immoral.

i could not agree more! Just a fraction of the money from that stupid war could be spent helping illegal immigrants to empower themselves, so they can build a better life for their families, either here or in their home countries. So many times, the root causes that bring so many illegal immigrants here, often under dangerous conditions, are never addressed by the people who scream so loudly and hysterically about them. There is a reason for their DESPERATION. Their countries of origin have f*cked-up economic conditions, inadequate education and job training programs, rampant corruption, and are often the casualties of our farm subsidies. If we really want to fix the illegal immigrant "problem," we should be helping them fix their countries, as well as ours. We start by treating them with respect and compassion, pay them fair wages, help them acquire skills that they could use in their home countries, and help them create a political and social network that will work towards fairness and justice in their home countries.If we're ever going to live peacefully with our neighbors to the south, we need to help them the way we'd like to be helped if the roles were reversed.

The biggest enemies we have are not terrorists, or nuclear bombs, or corrupt politicians. Our biggest enemy is POVERTY!!!

We should be fighting what causes terrorism: poverty, discrimination, illiteracy, etc. If you're fighting terrorism, it's too late.

I hate getting this garbage. Is it all coming from the same source? It always says, "pass this on if you agree, if not, delete it." Delete it, my ass. I'm going to have my say when someone puts this kind of stuff in my inbox. Of course I'm always polite, too, because, like you, I don't want go off on my friends too much. Sometimes I just wish they would think a little harder. They are good-hearted people. That's why I don't understand why they would be so mean-hearted as to want to make desperate people submit to drug-testing. They are also Christians. I asked them if Jesus would have required some sort of moral sniff-test before helping people. If I recall, he helped the prostitutes and thieves along with everyone else.

I agree with your response and wonder why it's okay for us to see our tax dollars wasted on needless wars, but we're supposed to get all upset about some poor, down and out people just needing a little help to get by. I'm much more angry that my tax dollars are spent on subsidies for oil companies and tax breaks for companies that ship jobs overseas. I don't understand why it's always some poor person or immigrant who gets all the blame and resentment over taxes.

I clicked on #9 because I was curious how they could possibly compute that figure, which would be the bulk of the money that supports the claim in the email. It leads to some weird site, NOT cnn. And the Snopes.com one is only about Bank of America offering credit cards to customers without SS numbers.

This appears about 2/3 of the way down in the transcript, in Lou Dobbs' 2006 interview with James Sensenbrenner. That's the sum total of the sourcing that Dobbs provides: "the most authoritative and recent study." So who did this study? Gimme credentials. Name me a SOURCE. Not to mention that the figure includes legal immigrants as well! It's bad enough that people want to circulate xenophobic sh*t like this email, but it's worse when the people who compile it are encouraged in their economic misapprehensions by supposedly responsible public figures like Lou Dobbs, who for some reason is just crazed by the whole subject of immigration.

Many of them pay payroll and social security taxes. All of them pay sales taxes. All of them pay property taxes. And lets not forget that they continue to do the jobs that no american would do at that rate.

You held a mirror up to the Rethugs' faces. The "illegals" aren't looking to dance around the sparkly, golden calf (BMW's, big mansions); they are looking to improve their lives. However, I do think those who choose to live in America should become legalized, which may be a non-progressive notion to some; to me, it comes from common sense & fairness.
