If Monsanto can supply the seed for the food supply of the world, they can control everything.
Monsanto wants all the profit, at any cost. The biodiversity of our seed bank is threatened if there is a limited availability of seeds and by destruction of seeds by bio-contamination. This doesn’t even touch on the issue that Round-Up ready crops produce less per acre than conventional crops.
This article addressing Canadian food supply issues, touches on a bit of the problem with corporations being in control of the world food supply. If they control the seed, they will have everyone indebted to them:

But in the 1980s, he says, the federal government began privatizing agricultural research.Corporate secrecy soon shrouded development of new seeds.

In 2005, Greenpeace revealed that Monsanto had applied for an international patent on genetically engineered pigs. The company has since sold its swine breeding division. The same year, leaked documents revealed Canada tried to thwart an international moratorium on so-called "Terminator" seeds. Jointly patented by Monsanto and the U.S. government, sterile seed technology modifies plants so the seeds the produce cannot germinate, making it impossible for farmers to replant them. A global ban on the technology still stands.
