What's your WalkScore?
This is cool.

http://www.walkscore.com/

What is Walk Score? We help homebuyers, renters, and real estate agents find houses and apartments in great neighborhoods. Walk Score shows you a map of what's nearby and calculates a Walk Score for any property. Buying a house in a walkable neighborhood is good for your health and good for the environment.

Basically, the site takes an address, and uses google maps/earth to find all "neat" things within a certain distance of the address (at the simplest possible level of analysis) - and assigns the address a score based upon that. It looks for things like grocery stores, parks, libraries, bars, etc. It may be customizable - haven't explored it too much yet.

Mine's 88! Woot!

where the public transportation is laughable and sidewalks are not readily available, imo by design.

But they missed half of our restaurants and all three of our great bars (one of them, Sam's is the most profitable per-square-foot bar in the US). And almost all of the clothing stores.

But we are, after all, a community of only 8,000 people. No pharmacy or gas station, either.

I can walk to

the long closed elementary school (closed for integration in the 50s.)

the ABC store (have to go through the woods)

the seafood restaurant next too the ABC store.

the SBC Baptist Church next door. :P

It's not walk friendly, but a bike is doable. I might consider that.

22. I scored a 49, but surprisingly, many places close by were not accounted for. . .
An example: it listed one park close by, a playground almost two miles away, but didn't list the park at the end of my street, or the ballparks just around the corner. The Albertson's store about 2 miles away was listed, but the independent market less than a mile away was not. Starbucks was listed as the only coffee source nearby, but there are at least six or seven others approximately the same distance away.

A semi-useful tool at best.

Lark Street neighborhood of Albany, NY- short walking distance to shops of all kinds, libraries, museums, art galleries, event centers, at least 3 bakeries, etc etc etc

it's a bit more of a hike for the coop, comic book shop and the two independent movie theatres, but I'm young and healthy enough to make those walks a couple times a month.

29. I suspect it's a hellava lot easier to get a 0 than a 100
any 'burbs location or any of the few remaining rural spots all get low scores- I wish there was some differentiation between true rural and burbs in this, both involve a hike to get anywhere, but I much prefer nice walk through rural areas to suburban areas; for one thing, in rural areas, the automobile traffic and the crossings aren't life threatening!

There are dozens of new shops and facilities not listed- and there's an Alberston's on there that's been closed for 2 years!

54 seems pretty low, considering how much is really close- and the fact that almost everything you can think of around here easily accessable by bike or light rail.

It said that there is a Safeway only .17 miles from my house which is not true. The nearest grocery store is 2 miles away. It also listed a private home in my neighborhood which is listed as "Andrews Refrigeration Inc." as a restaurant. Another home was listed as a bookstore.

"0 - 25 = Driving Only: Virtually no neighborhood destinations within walking range. You can walk from your house to your car!"

I can bike, and do bike. No public transportation though. I live in the country a few miles from town. Don't have to go to town much though and I do walk around here a whole lot.

Have a stock of food and a garden, lots of books and a computer, doing fine here.
