This Memorial Day, I miss you, Grandpa.
Edited on Sun May-25-08 05:13 PM by PeaceNikki
My grandpa was a WWII vet. He wasn't drafted, he enlisted at the age of 30. When he passed, we found suitcases full of photos from the war. Photos of his army friends, photos of mass graves, photos of descruction. Photos of history. Hundreds and hundreds of photos. He was a patriot not wholly uncommon of that generation. He served on the frontlines in Europe but he never ever talked about it. My mom says he'd occasionaly wake from terrible nightmares.

He was a kind and loving grandfather. He shared Brach's candy and told us he lost his hair in the war. He shared every holiday with us and always made sure we knew we were loved. He recruited us all to be members of the "Clean-plate Club". My grandpa was the only grandparent I ever knew.

And he died, fittingly, on Memorial Day - 21 years ago today - May 25, 1987.

Here's to you, Grandpa. :toast:

1. he sounds like such a wonderful man
I'm sure that looking into his grandchildren's faces helped him make sense of what he went through in the war.
