Recount... the votes were there
That is what my a-political hubby said after we watched it

AND

had those 20 thousand people had not been purged, there would not have been the need for recounts

jebus

10. Democrats are in charge in most of the swing states
Edited on Mon May-26-08 02:37 AM by Hippo_Tron
As you may recall during the movie Daley made the comment that Lawton Chiles isn't in charge anymore. Jeb Bush and Katherine Harris had a good bit to do with stopping that recount and purging the voter roles just like Ken Blackwell did in 2004.

Fortunately the Democrats are in charge of the voting in most swing states, except Florida. I don't think this election will come down to Florida, though.

18. You too?
Oh, brother! My stomach was in knots watching that movie. It brought back so many painful memories. I was living in Broward County at the time, and could not believe what was happening! I was literally pacing the floors waiting for SCOTUS to hand down their verdict.

I remember jumping up and down for joy when the TV said there was a protection violation. Alright, I thought, now let's get counting. Damn, if SCOTUS didn't F*%K all of us over on that one - and on purpose, no doubt.

America died that day.

I'll never forget, nor forgive.

Gore was right, though, he couldn't win even if he won. The Right Wing would have crucified him and found every which way to thwart his administration. They wouldn't have even stood with him if 911 had happened on his watch. They'd have blamed him. Even so, his presidency would have been the best thing for this country. Look at what and where we are today. Shameful.

12. Ditto. I feel your pain...
I long ago gave up trying to talk about this with friends. We can calmly present all the facts in the world, but I think a lot of people just don't want to know, or at least admit they know. It's easier for them to just label someone a conspiracy nut, sore loser, etc. It somehow seems to be more comfortable for them to cling to an illusion than admit that the 2000 election went so horribly wrong. But I have to believe that's a cold comfort.

11. And they did it again in 2004...and will do it again in 2008!
thank goodness that Florida voters demanded a paper trail, but in order to do so they had to vote on a date that caused the DNC to remove all their delegates from the convention. As such, Florida will be punished, angry voters may swing the state to McCain, and the GOP continues to outsmart us.

14. They Simply Imposed Stalinism Over Americanism
"Those who cast the votes decide nothing. Those who count the votes decide everything." -- Josef Stalin (since echoed by bush, baker, rove, harris, blackwell, feeney, scalia, et. al.)

The Miami Herald proved that Gore won the VotERS by tens of thousands on Dec. 3rd. (Google, "If The Vote Were Flawless")

After that, every action taken to impose the opposite of the known consent of the governed of Florida (and thus the nation) was an act of treason. An election is a survey, not a contest. There was no "mystery" about what the (formally) sovereign American People had declared.

And that truth was spreading like wildfire. From 15% saying it was "not fair and square" to a majority months later. Even in the face of total Euphemedia complicty, we had a real chance to begin to put things right.

But then PNAC got its "Pearl Harbor." And we saw what 21st century fascism looks like. (Sorry, no goose-stepping.)

Unfortunately, they released their results in early September 2001 and nobody paid any attention. I wish the movie had included a post script about that.

20. Who Wanted It More...Baker The Fixer...
My son was too young to remember all that went on, thus he had a similar reaction to many others here as to how sad and brazen the recount had been rigged and the election stolen. The Supremes overstepped their Constitutional authority in not allowing the Florida court to full due process and then issuing that "one time only" finding.

The fix was in and the movie shows who the fixer was...James Baker. He knew which levers to pull and what cards he had in his deck while Christopher and Boies had limited options. The bottom line was the GOOP was determined to win at all costs and they would not be denied in Florida...they had the right people in the right places and then could count on the SCOTUS to seal the deal. The fix was in long before the first ballot was cast.

22. This was where it all began - our national nightmare
I distinctly remember the exact moment on election night in November of 2000 when I became sick to my stomach and gasped, "Uh-oh!"

It was after Florida, which had already been called for Gore, switched to "too close to call." Inexplicably, the television cameras turned their focus onto the Bush family, which was holed up in what looked like a hunting lodge somewhere in Texas, and they were all saying that they knew Florida was theirs. I still have nightmares about that moment. In them, Bush I and Barbara sit in the background as W explains in his broken English why he knows he will win because his brother Jeb told him so. In my nightmare, there is also some kind of animal head hanging on the wall. Is this scene in the film? God, I hope not. I'd rather watch the shower scene in Psycho.

Anyone else up for filing a class action suit against Baker, Bush et al for intentional infliction of psychological trauma?

I recorded the movie and will watch it when I feel stronger.

23. I wanted to hear more about the Caging Lists...
That was a disappointment. Otherwise, an outstanding movie which gave me insight into the mindset of Gore. I was very disappointed with what I witnessed. Though I now love and honor Gore, he was far too noble which came off as not wanting to fight hard enough. Compare Christopher to Baker and it was like a Chihuahua trying to fight a bulldog--no match!
