A fascinating look at the personal side of Howard Dean from his driver in Rochester.
This is an interesting view of Howard Dean from the driver's point of view. I discovered this blog recently called Rochester Turning. It was about the only place to find any coverage of Dean's visit to that area of New York.

Rochester Turning: A local looks at Dean

Howard Dean is every bit as dedicated, focused, witty, insightful and human as his media persona. He is also very kind, and he laughs a lot.

...."The job is endless. The barrage of input, requests for his attention, appointments, schedules, phone calls, photographers, fans, press …. it’s daunting. And he appears to relish it. When he speaks to a group, the passion is real. But the thing he really enjoys is the Q&A - he wants to hear what his audience is thinking about, our concerns, what challenges we face at the local level. When it’s over, he reviews those concerns with his staff to make sure that we all learn how we can do better. His intellectual curiosity and appetite for knowledge are infectious. Many of us were initially hooked when we heard him say “What I want to know….” These days, we’re more likely to hear him saying “let me tell you what we’ve learned …..”

Watching him in action, I was reminded that there are bright lines and rules everywhere. There are public meetings and private interactions. National issues and State matters. Elected officials and aspiring politicians. DNC and DFA. Agreements, and agreements to disagree. Endorsed candidates and primary contenders. Races he can comment on, and races he cannot. Wingnuts, and the Democratic wing.

The reference to DFA means there is no connection. He has had to distance himself from it for legal reasons.

I worked, I learned, I listened. I made myself useful. Apparently I did something right, because I was in the right place at the right time and answered the phone when it rang. I said “yes”.

On the last leg of the trip, we listened to music. I had some Knopfler. He recognized James Taylor, Van Morrison and Emmylou Harris on the collaborations. We talked about campaign music. We talked about campaigns. He showed me shortcuts through rural New York. We talked about the past, and the future. His attitude is unflinchingly positive, wasting no energy on things that might have been. He said “You can’t collect rent from the people living in your head”. Learn from it, move on.

When we arrived at his destination, he thanked me again, (as if he still didn’t understand that I was the one who felt like I won the lottery). It was late, he had explained directions back to my route, the sky was clear and the moon was bright. He said “Hey, if you want to see something, instead of going back the way we came you can take the road around there – it’ll take about thirty seconds extra, but it’s worth it.” I went in the direction he pointed, and I was treated to a spectacular view of moonlight on a mountain lake. Yes, Governor, it was worth it. It was all worth it. Thank you.

I hope a less stressful, more profitable project awaits him after he leaves the DNC.

9. Bottom line--he's smart, kind, nice, normal, friendly and likable!
What's not to admire? He's an ideal Democratic candidate! So sad he didn't get far four years ago!

I'm very proud of how he's handled the DNC job (a nightmare--at best!). But he has handled this assignment with aplomb! And, I hope he reins Hillary and her minions in--she doesn't run things anymore!

Everyday, I am thankful that Howard Dean is in charge right now. I'm EXPECTING that we won't have a "2000" result at the Democratic National Convention because of his leadership. Instead, we'll actually have the true winner on the ballot!

(IF things don't work out this way--and Hillary manages to steal things...then, I think I'll just give up on this country because it's become a true "third-world" nation! And, I think I'll have to look for a more "democratic" place to live! At this point, it will be easy to prove that many other nations do a better job of insuring their election integrity than we do! Gosh...even the Ukraine INVESTIGATED when their candidate was poisoned! (He won!) The US never bothered to ACTUALLY count the votes for Gore VS Bush UNTIL IT WAS TOO LATE! Our Winner lost as a result! ME? I truly believe the U.N. should monitor our elections for fairness and integrity!)

I just want to believe in America again! At this point it's very hard! I want all of the lies and cheating erased! I want honesty again.

11. During his 2004 campaign a friend of mine drove him to airport
Dean had just appeared on Hardball at Harvard's Kennedy School and, being notoriously frugal during the campaign, he had volunteers drive him back and forth to Logan. We waited outside the hall with local Cambridge Police while Dean finished shaking hands inside the hall. I remember a couple of Dean for America staffers joking around with the police showing them how to run along side the car like the Secret Service. Then Dean came out. He was smiling and shook hands with all the police and thanked them for their protection. He got into the front seat next to my friend, said hello, thanked him and immediately took out his cell phone to check in with his campaign.

I had met Dean a few other times while helping out in NH. He was the most gracious, attentive, hard-working and organized candidate I had ever seen. Despite the MSM meme that he was "angry," I never saw him treat anyone with disrespect or harshness. It is amazing that this gentleman, in the truest sense of the word, was morphed into some crazy, angry person by the media. I will never forget the night after Kerry's defeat the following November when Dean had a conference call with his supporters. He acknowledged our pain and bone-tiredness. He said that we couldn't give up. We could take a couple of weeks off but then we had work to do if we wanted to take our country back. Sure enough, a couple of weeks later we got word that he would be running for DNA chair and we should start contacting our delegates about supporting him.

The man is a gift to this country. I hope that in the future when historians look back on this dangerous time, they will acknowledge what a hero Dean was and is.

He is one of the few genuine people in politics. I think he has survived because he has goals and doesn't get sidetracked by minutiae.

13. A write up from 2004 from his driver from Dartmouth to Burlington.
I have not forgotten this write up from 2004, and it is still available on a search.

Dean in the Backseat

From the beginning of the ride, I was struck by how real Howard Dean is. He is neither a true politician nor schmoozer, and his phone number is even listed in the local directory. He has two kids in college and could pass as a typical family man living in suburbia. We talked about where he was at 20 years old (not completely sure of what he was going to do with his life), his career as a doctor, and how his life in politics evolved from a part-time job as lieutenant governor into running for president. Dean used a wistful tone while relating a history he knew that I already was familiar with. He did not seem regretful, but rather as if he were at a fork in the road and did not know which path to follow after an extravaganza of national excitement in epic proportions and eventual loss. He told me that he probably would not go back into medicine after spending more than a decade out of the field, but was unsure of what lay ahead.

I asked Dean if he had any regrets—a loaded question, but a valid one. His answer was an unwavering “no.” He believes that his candidacy changed this election with his emphasis on grassroots support, overwhelming youth participation, and finally making the other democratic candidates take a stand.

This part was interesting.

Above all, in the two hours we conversed together, I realized how amazingly smart this man is. He seemed knowledgeable on everything and was well-versed in every subject from algae and eutrophication (he has done research on the ecological conditions on Lake Champlain) to the West Nile Virus in New England to how he feels that democratization should continue in Iraq. We talked about everything and anything, and I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to talk with someone who has such an informed and insightful view on the world.

Our time wrapped up quickly, and we were soon (safely) at his driveway. I suppose that I expected something more impressive, but his two-story house seemed perfect for the candidate who has always emphasized that politics begin at home. Dean invited me in, and I was treated with the utmost hospitality by his wife Judith, who handed me a fudgsicle and asked me to sit down at the kitchen table and talk. There I spent the next twenty minutes discussing Dartmouth in the summertime, my thoughts on the D-plan vs. the semester system, and what I thought about Healthy Choice fudgsicles with a presidential candidate and his wife, who has always been (falsely) depicted by the media as too busy to care for her husband’s campaign. Wow.

14. Dean is the Best Thing That Ever Happened to the Democratic Party.
Dean came to Hawaii in May of 2006 to speak to our State Democratic Convention. He gave a magnificent speech which had the house roaring with enthusiasm to take our country back. As DNC chair, he put two full time Democratic staffers to work to build the party, as he did in the other 49 states of the country. HIs "50 state strategy" worked miracles and in November of 2006 we gained Democratic majorities in the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate. Dean laid the groundwork for the success of the Obama campaign, which used his ideas -- the 50 state strategy and funding via the internet to build a winning campaign.

If Dean were from a bigger, more critical state, he would make a superb vice presidential nominee. I hope we will see Dean in a cabinet position as Secretary of Health and Welfare in an Obama administration. As a doctor who believes in government funded healthcare and knows how to bring that about politically, he would successfully bring about deeply needed changes in our healthcare delivery system and in our lives.

20. Considering Who We Have As Governor Now In VT....
... Can I please have him back?

Vermont really needs his leadership and there is no one who can beat Douglas (the current repug nitwit in office).

He's done a great job as the leader of the DNC, but I do miss him.

great leaders - kind, compassionate people, we understand the crazy making of others and learn to move on - they have learned better than me - but I am working on it - they are my mentors on how to be frank, open, and follow your beliefs - no matter what your critics have to say

Thank you for this great post, and for all your other wonderful writings, posts and input.
Howard Dean is such a 'normal' human being...normal in the sense of in balance, centered...
I also want to thank you for your kind words in reply to my post about Gov.Dean in Rochester back on about May 16.. but I didn't see it until now because I don't know how to be notified when someone replies to a "topic' in which I am interested, or how to even find them...
