Dana Perino to the rescue: "It is sad — this is not the Scott we knew"
White House: McClellan is 'disgruntled'

Former press secretary alleges Bush used propaganda to mislead Americans

WASHINGTON - The White House blasted former press secretary Scott McClellan Wednesday, claiming that his new book about President Bush and the Iraq war shows McClellan is a "disgruntled" former employee.

"Scott, we now know, is disgruntled about his experience at the White House," press secretary Dana Perino said in a statement. "For those of us who fully supported him, before, during and after he was press secretary, we are puzzled. It is sad — this is not the Scott we knew."

Perino said Bush is aware of McClellan's claims: "The book, as reported by the press, has been described to the President. I do not expect a comment from him on it — he has more pressing matters than to spend time commenting on books by former staffers."

"In the permanent campaign era, it was all about manipulating sources of public opinion to the president's advantage," McClellan writes.

21. Bartlett's turn:
Bartlett rips McClellan, calls allegation 'total crap'

http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2008/05/28/bartlett-rips-mcclellan-calls-allegation-total-crap/

(CNN) — Former White House counselor Dan Bartlett lashed out at Scott McClellan in a telephone interview Wednesday, saying the allegations that the media was soft on the White House are "total crap," adding that advisers of President Bush are "bewildered and puzzled" by the allegations in McClellan's new book.

"It's almost like we're witnessing an out-of-body experience," Bartlett said of McClellan. "We're hearing from a completely different person we didn't have any insight into."

Bartlett added that intimates of the President feel McClellan has violated a trust. "Part of the role of being a trust adviser is to honor that trust," said Bartlett. "It's not your place now to go out" and criticize the President like this.

"What did he really believe when he was serving as press secretary?" Bartlett asked.

Bartlett bluntly said it was "total crap" for McClellan to suggest the media was too easy on the Bush administration in the run-up to the Iraq war.

"The problem is the intelligence was wrong," said Bartlett. "But this debate has been conflated into either we lied or on your side the tough questions were not asked. I think the truth is the intelligence was wrong."

22. i particularly "like" how bartlett and others are absolving the press of ineptitude ...
... or complicity in the war run-up, as if that pathetic attempt to re-write history will justify the lies of the bush administration.

How many times since O'Neill have they talked about a former insider of this administration this way after the book comes out? I think they're just ticked because McClellan stole the stories *They're* intending to use in *their* books.

The Scotty we knew was an empty suit, willing to push any talking point (no matter how preposterous) on the media and never question the moral authority of the administration. The Scotty we knew had no balls and probably wouldn't know what to do with them anyway.

Oh, Scotty!! What's happened to you?!

24. It's pretty ludicrous for Dana to suggest that Bush isn't interested in this.
In all likelihood, a lot of top level pressure was brought to bear on Scotty before the book ever came out. The real question is what Scotty might have published in the absence of that pressure.

32. CNN: Ari Fleischer is "heatbroken"...
Former White House spokesman Ari Fleischer, McClellan's predecessor, said in a statement "something about this book that just doesn't make any sense" and that he was "heartbroken that Scott feels this way about his time at the White House."

"For 2 1/2 years Scott and I worked shoulder to shoulder at the White House. Scott was my always reliable, solid deputy," Fleischer said. "Not once did Scott approach me -- privately or publicly -- to discuss any misgivings he had about the war in Iraq or the manner in which the White House made the case for war.

"If Scott had such deep misgivings, he should not have accepted the press secretary position as a matter of principle," he said.

The current Scott appears to be telling some portion of the truth, finally. And I imagine that does make them sad there in the White House. Especially to the extent that his revelations implicate them, criminally.
