Katie Couric argues the networks were not aggressive enough
Edited on Wed May-28-08 07:25 PM by pnwmom
in reporting during the run-up to Iraq war -- and she describes the pressure brought to bear on the networks by the Bush administration. Charles Gibson defends the reporting, thinks they did a good job.

I know people around here love to hate Katie Couric, but I think she's one of the better ones.

6. Thanks for the other side.
Maybe she's learned something since last year -- because the new video seems to show some new insight.

4. it's easy to risk your life after everyone thinks you're dead.
Katie is right...but why now? Very few people with national exposure risked the safety of smiling obediently for their masters during the build up to war. Very few. In fact, I would say Olbermann and Moyers. Maybe Donahue...but he was fired.

5. Actually, I think she is taking a risk -- given that her job situation now

is iffy. She could have taken a safer path, but she didn't.

And I'd rather that she have some hindsight because it could improve her reporting in the future -- as opposed to Gibson, who thinks that everything he did was just fine.

Welcome to DU, Odious justice!

7. Heh - not much of a risk, though, if she already knows she's gone.

8. She wants another job, doesn't she? Speaking out won't help her get one.
But she did anyway.

9. Fair enough. It was your OP that was the proximate cause of my Ashleigh Banfield post....
The (tangential) relevance to this thread being: there's a line for jobs, and Katie "Navy SEALs Rawk!" Couric ain't at the front of it.

10. Better Katic Couric, who appears to have learned something
over the last year, than people like Gibson or Williams.

11. She certainly was the most impressive and most brutally honest of the so-called
"Big Three."

I wrote a rant on this that Huffington Post just picked up!

13. Fox News led the media war front with their jets flying across the screen and all that shit
Tanks, jets, America saving the day, Saddam throws people in blenders...and they intimidated the other networks by bragging about their ratings so they all got on the warbeat to outfox fox.

15. Could This Be Her Lifeboat???
Remember, Katie's on life support...the fact her name even shows up here today is the first in quite a while. CBS News is mired in last place and she needs something/anything to keep her from ending up on Court TV or replacing Kelly Ripa. And Katie actually is in a good situation to take advantage.

Unlike Gibson and Williams, who were shilling like the rest of the network anchors during the run-up to the invasion, Couric was still hosting starlet gossip on the Today Show. She "walked" into the game late and can turn the worm faster than the others. No doubt the suits at CBS are noticing the rise in M$NBC's ratings and how beating up on the booosh regime and repugnicans is now bringing in ratings. Remember, Katie is on a short leash...always has been and maybe with nothing to lose, she'll surprise some people. I don't know why I think this way, but I saw this interview and could see a fire in her eyes rather than the blank stare of Williams and Gibson. What does she have to lose??

16. Remember when she crawled up Michael Moore's ass about the way he dressed?
That was when he was promoting 'Fahrenheit 9/11' in '04. CBS's Hannah Storm poo-pooing that Moore made too much of a fuss about * taking so much vacation time prior to the event.

Watching the MSM squirm over this just too excellent. If only we had access to 2001/2002 GD archives, there are plenty of threads that discussed media whoredom prior to the war. There's so much ammo to counter this.
