Thieves Drill Into Gas Tank Of Local Woman's SUV

updated 10:35 a.m. ET, Thurs., May. 29, 2008
CLEVELAND - With gas prices well above $4 a gallon, thieves have taken notice, with some going to dangerous extremes to steal gas.

No longer sticking to merely siphoning gasoline from tanks, some thieves are climbing under cars and actually drilling into the gas tanks to drain the gas.

It's extremely dangerous and becoming more common, reported NewsChannel5's Dan Haggerty.

Jennifer Gentile drives an SUV that hold a lot of gas. A full tank is worth nearly $100.

A price, for some, that is worth a big risk. Gentile found out while filling up at the pump.

"One of the attendants looked down, and there was a small hole that looks like a drill bit went in," she said.

10. You missed the sarcasm - obviously
I don't advocate crime on anyone for any reason.

8. THAT'S a very unfair thing to say! Many, if not most of the people that currently own an SUV
can't afford to get rid of it! They owe too much on the loan, and the prices have dropped so much, they have no choice but to keep it!

My son & his family had an Expedition. They bought it becaue they had a popup camper trailer they used all summer long, and had to have a vehicle that could tow it. They were lucky, they sold it about 1 1/2 years ago...but of course had to also sell their camper! It's still better for them now than having to fuel that moster, but they & the 2 grandkids really miss the camping trips.

12. Sometimes you have to sacrifice to leave a smaller carbon footprint.
When our leaders permit the sale and support of oversized vehicles that use clean, renewable fuel, I'll be the first one in line to get one.

Besides, isn't it possible (and cheaper) to rent a large vehicle for the occasional trip?

5. Well that's one way
to get around locked gas caps. Maybe not the smartest way, but a way nonetheless.
