So, I just ordered 2400 dollars worth of freeze dried food. Crazy or not?

I have been broke most of my 45 years. I finally paid off all my debts & the mortgage but still I am concerned about the future. I am not so confident we will pull out of "the new world order". I am highly concerned about our food supply & prices. It just looks as bad as I have ever seen things in my lifetime. The food is good for 30 years so I can eat it instead of dog food when I am on social security if nothing bad happens.

My thoughts are it may help in the event of;
1) Long term unemployment.
2) Food shortages.
3) Economic collapse.
4) Civil strife.
5) Pandemic.
6) Old age.
7) World war three.

I have a well on a solar pump so water won't be an issue. I also have 15 acres of land to help supplement the food with canning from a garden & am planning on a chicken house next year.

Crazy or not?

1. Crazy, how will you reconstitute the food without fresh water?

5. You missed my mention of the well?
Solar pump newly installed. I am about 10 miles from the George Dickel distillery, on the same aquifier. Really good water flows from the well, less than 50 parts per million of solids.

19. I wish I were near you for the garden space!
I'm on my 3rd year of a great veggie garden and wish now that I had more space. Plant and grow what you can - I envy you your opportunities.

BTW - join 'Plant a Row' for your local food bank/farmer's market - what you can donate goes to those in need.

Peace!

I've got a piece of land perfect for the idea. It's gently sloped towards the south & near my well pump. I just have to figure out which plants to group in each nutrient solution. Here is the "back yard" (part of it), right now I let a neighbor hay it for his cows.

8. You should do it soon shanti. Prices will only increase.
I don't look at it as "blowing" money, I will eat the food at some point. Either it will be in a dire emergency or over time.

15. I was.
I still remember the scoutmaster. MR. VanDerlyster, that guy could do anything. He carved a dovetail hitch just to heat the water for his coffee. He took us on a winter camp out WITHOUT tents for a whole weekend and nobody died. We all built snow shelters & lived! Great guy, he taught a lot of kids some essential skills everyone should have.

6. Preparation is never bad.

The 15 acres of arable land and the solar well pump are probably even more important, depending on where you live.

10. I agree with your food purchase, however..........
I just read "world made by hand". William Howard Kunstler's new book. He is the author of "the long emergency". It's fiction but it takes place in my county in NY and infarct it takes place in my town. You should read it to have a grip on your local economy. Each local economy is different but there are many gems in this book.

I want to bookmark it and maybe stock up on some items for ourselves. Oh, I mean the website too.

I think your planning is excellent. You might need a gun to fight off anyone who knows you have supplies, though.

16. My thoughts are also along those lines.
If you wanna keep your 15 acres, ya gotta defend your 15 acres.

But I don't want to rain on your parade. You've got a better start than most of us...most of the suburban people I know, anyway. (Including myself.)

21. Here is the link.
I hate to promote one business over another but this is the one I bought from. http://beprepared.com/default.asp?&sid=overture&eid=ovB200703013&OVRAW=Be%20Prepared&OVKEY=be%20prepared&OVMTC=standard&OVADID=4461826522&OVKWID=39572266522

They are currently back ordered but it is due to increased demand. The orders are being filled.

Yes, a firearm is another tool you will probably need. I am not too concerned about people though, I do own a couple for personal defense & taking game if needed. I own a fire extinguisher & life insurance but hope to never need those either!

12. You gotta eat.
Even if you only dip into in every now and then over the next decade(s) (when you hit a rough patch), you'll be in good shape as long as it lasts.

BTW, how are land prices down your way? I'm about five years past ready to make the move.

22. From D.C. to Tennessee? Are YOU crazy? (just kidding)
I used to live in Silver Spring just north of D.C. in the early 80's. As a matter of fact, that's what drew me to a different lifestyle. I couldn't deal with all the freakin people.

I live in southern middle Tennessee near Shelbyville. Land prices went on a ride up during the bubble & some still believe in the inflated prices. I was trying to buy an adjoining piece of land from a neighbor, I offered OVER what a nearby property went for auction & was turned down. He said "people around here can't afford it".

Down to prices. There are some who think they will get 10k an acre, others with large tracts ask between 3k-5k an acre. I have seen some properties for under 900 an acre but I suspect they are discounted for a reason.

Check out the listings here;

This is a company that sells rural property nationwide.

to live with a Scottish caravan during that period while she went to school. She can't seem to stop eating. Grabs meals whenever they're offered, even if it's just an hour after she ate a big meal, and goes for the big steaks without any regard to costs when someone invites her. She's as thin as a rail.

I respect her experiences, and her decisions affect no one but herself, therefore, I respect her decisions, as I respect yours.

20. I'm jealous...
I want to find some land and build a small straw-baled house w/ solar, a well, and geothermal...I want to be off the gird. Have a garden...and having a back-up food supply (in case of a bad crop) is a very smart idea.

To be frank, I've been reading how so many on DU are so happy and hopeful because of BO's nomination, I just don't see how he or anyone else is going to provide us with food and energy at seasonable prices. I'm very worried about our future.

Good for you!

I want you to live like that too femrap! I am far from where I want to be, I would love to get off public power and provide for my own use. Right now it seemed the food is more important than anything else. If they can screw us blue selling gasoline they will do it with food as well.

I wish I could because things are going to get BAD. Much worse than they are now. I wish I could share the rah-rah crap going on right now but I am afraid one more corporate stooge more or less as President won't make a bit of difference.

plus some of that good canned butter from internet grocer. MRE depot now has canned bacon and that is next on my list. Doubled the garden this year. I think the next administration will try hard but I think it will be a miracle if times don't get real hard.

How can Obama be expected to clean up this mess in time to stop the inevitable? He will be taking the helm of the Titanic just before it hits the ice. The best I can hope for is a softer collapse, Bush has screwed us so badly it would be a miricle to stop it.
