Anyone else offended by this "Masters in Military History" ad that
seems to show up constantly? I'm wondering why such a pro-warmongering ad would be considered appropriate at DU.

1. I'm a military historian, so no, I do not find it offensive.

2. Military Historians are not warmongerers
War is a part of history -- they study that aspect of history, that's all. The degree is being offered by a military academy (Norwich).

3. Here's why it would be considered appropriate:
Because they pay for it.

If you donate, you don't have to look at the ads. If you don't donate, we have to pay for your bandwidth somehow.

6. It's hard to believe that that's really the reason. Would you accept an
RNC ad, or one for some rightwing tv show, just because they would pay for it? I'd like to think that the reason I don't see those here is that you refuse them, but if it's truly all about who will pay, then I'll reluctantly conclude that I'm more naive than I thought.

7. Why the heck would the RNC buy an ad on DU?

4. One who believes a graduate student of Military History is "pro-warmongering" is woefully ignorant.

5. Sun Tsu, Art of War:
"The best strategy is that which does not lead to battle."

So no, military theory is not necessarly war-mongerish. It can be the opposite.

8. Yes, but many of the ways Sun Tsu would avoid that battle are now war crimes.
