Obama says the DNC will no longer take $ from Registered Lobbyist
Obama Camp Sets New Money Guidelines

By Jeff Zeleny

Senator Barack Obama, as he becomes his party’s presumptive presidential nominee, is starting to exert his authority over the Democratic National Committee. A first step? New fund-raising guidelines.

Mr. Obama is announcing today that the D.N.C. will no longer accept contributions from federal lobbyists or political action committees, which follows the rules he established for his own campaign last year.

“We want the Democratic Party to conform to his standards of openness to reduce the influence of special interests,” Linda Douglass, a campaign spokeswoman, told reporters today before Mr. Obama flew from New York City for a campaign stop in Virginia.

10. I'd like some definitive confirmation on this point.
I recall seeing on DU pretty recently, that well over 50% of all that $$$ raised was in SMALL contributions (ie: $50 & less).

16. CORRECTION: It should be 3-1, not 4-1. Sorry. See: Obama has cash advantage over McCain
Obama has cash advantage over McCain

<snip>

Obama has raised three times more than McCain -- $265 million to McCain's $90 million. He has tapped far more donors than any other candidate in 2008. Although he has not yet reached the estimated 2 million donors who gave to Bush through November four years ago, Obama has received money from 1.5 million individuals, whose average gift is less than $100.

Obama has so many donors that it crashed the FEC's accounting software sez Rachel Maddow (last week).

Edited on Thu Jun-05-08 10:39 AM by Benhurst

" '(Obama) gets an asterisk that says he is trying to be different,' Weissman said. 'But overall, the same wealthy interests are funding his campaign as are funding other candidates, whether or not they are lobbyists.'"

For starters, bundling should be made illegal.

A lot of once and future lobbyists are no longer registered as such; but they represent corporations and bundle contributions for them. Reforms which do not address bundling are more form than substance, and allow the powerful to continue to manipulate the system.

27. It's a GREAT START.
Public financing will be a reality by 2010. There is a majority for it now that Kerry-Wellstone didn't have in 1997 when they had only five votes for their Clean Money, Clean Elections bill in the entire senate.

How about freedom? Let individuals donate whatever they want it just has to be made public. No corporations, organizations, ect.

Edited on Thu Jun-05-08 12:08 PM by blm
Individuals need some limitations because some are their own special interests - like a Jackson Stephens who needed BCCI covered up, or a Dell who wanted far reaching government contracts or Prince who wanted war for Blackwater's benefit.

37. Just knowing the money was given makes it an issue.
I agree that an individual donating a few million to a campaign isn't good. But as long as it is publicly available we can decide if it's good or not. The problem I have is that we run the risk of only having very rich people run for office since they have no limits on how much money they can spend. Openess usually gets rid of corruption pretty quickly.

and fight Closed Government's protectors, GOPs and Dems. So far no Republicans have supported the books to be opened on the last few decades that led to 9-11 and rampant vote theft, so there are none I am willing to support.

We should install webcams all over washington. To watch the politicians. It would be cool if Obama would install them in the White House so they can be out in the open. No secrets are needed to do the peoples buisness.

Just for giggles, when the time comes to mail my letter of complaint to someone, I'm going to cc him too. It sounds like putting a dent in political corruption is something he's concerned about.

Anyone else have ideas who I should cc?

The DCCC and the DSCC. If Obama somehow forced his will on those guys then you'd really hear the howling from the hyenas. When he forces Schumer and company to pull their snouts out of the corporate slop bucket, then you'll know he's really in charge.
