15. I believe it's close to a record setting number of tornadoes, I would suggest for all builders,
engineers, architects and such to start designing homes and buildings more aerodynamically with rounded corners instead of the traditional sharp corner concept. I don't believe any structure will take a direct hit from a tornado, but I believe this will increase the building and human survivability chances in the general area. I recall the photos from the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and about the only structure left standing was dome shaped.

I believe the general climate will only continue to become radicalized in different ways and we need to start adapting to the best of our ability on many fronts.

19. It's definitely in contention for 2nd place...
Due to the statistical noise involved with tracking tornadoes, it is unlikely that anyone will be able to verify a correlation with climate. It would take a large and extended rise in frequency to get a statistically useful signal.

That isn't to say there isn't a correlation, only that it's unlikely to be definitively measurable.

20. I would think as climate change has affected larger areas
with unseasonably warm weather early in the year, parts of the nation which don't normally get tornadoes will see more of them as there is an increased chance of a clash between warm and cold weather.

Of course this is just my hypothesis but it seems logical to me.

23. It's definitely a going theory.
The problem with using tornadoes as a measurement is that their locations are determined by doppler radar, and radar coverage is far from complete. The other main indicator is actual structure damage. There has been a rise in reported damage, but that also correlates with the increase of actual inhabited area over time (rise of the suburbs, exurbs, etc). So teasing all that out, and getting a verifiable "climate" signal, is dicey.

Tracking just severe t-storms might be a better bet. I don't know. Our modern high-resolution data doesn't go back very far. A few decades at most.

26. Thanks for the link, phantom power.

One way they may be able to track historic tornadic activity is to examine only long time populated areas for tornado reports. Disregard modern subdivisions or developments in more rural areas.

not sure if this link gets into the big wind dimension of the teachings, but if you scroll down to the verbatim transcripts of the elders at the House of Mica (UN Headquarters) it does lay out the general picture the traditional wisdomkeepers of Turtle Island have tried to convey to the people...

34. Thanks for the link, SpiralHawk,
this is a fascinating read. Sheer logic or common sense should tell someone that Earth simply can't sustain life which ravages it without any sense of proportion or consideration.

This seems like a coincidence but last night as I was drifting off to sleep, I started visualizing about a translucent pearl colored globe and I felt a sense of peace which helped me to relax.

"While at the Cry of the Earth, Tom met Naoko Haga, a Japanese woman who had been living in the US for several years. Her husband, Hiroshi, had recently died, and she was still in mourning. As she talked with Tom she told him of the vision she and her husband had long shared -- the vision of the Sunbow, or Sundog, as an emerging symbol of racial and religious harmony."

6. They say its been 22 years since they have seen storms line up like this
Wichita and most of the eastern half of Kansas have been elevated to a high risk for severe weather today by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Storm Prediction Center.

Portions of Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska and Missouri are also included in the massive zone, and most of the rest of Kansas is in a slight or moderate risk zone.

Forecasters warn that tornadoes could form later this morning in northwest Kansas, and the tornado threat will spread east as heating of the atmosphere intensifies. The supercell thunderstorms can be expected to yield "strong.... long-track tornadoes," the center's synopsis of conditions state.

The National Weather Service in Wichita predicts thunderstorms will form in central and south-central Kansas by mid- to late afternoon, with the potential for hail as large as baseballs, damaging winds of up to 80 miles an hour, and "a few strong to violent long-lived tornadoes later this evening," according to a statement issued early this morning.

While the tornado threat should diminish late tonight in the Wichita area, lines of strong thunderstorms could still pound the region with hail, strong winds and heavy rain.

Check Kansas.com often for updates.

14. Wow, so you remember it well!!!
I hate hate hate these storms. I was PG in the Andover tornado. My best friend lost her house and it was only by the grace of god she didn't lose her life. She was working 3rd shift and was sleeping and didn't hear the sirens. Someone saw her sleeping and pounded on her door to get to safety. She had less than 3 minutes to safety

33. It's one of those things that stick with you
We weren't even near where the tornado hit. We lived near the middle of town and it hit the west side. But the terror of that night is vivid. It hit at a few minutes after six and the power went out right before the sirens were sounded. It wasn't until afterwards that a neighbor came over to see if we'd heard. Then we were scared. Later that evening around 9, the sirens did go off that time. Luckily, whatever was spotted went away quickly and there was no damage that time. For the longest time after that, anytime the sky got dark and stormy looking, my sisters and I got really scared. Makes me nervous when the meteorologists compare the weather pattern today to that day in June, 1974.

13. We had the most amazing electrical storm I've ever seen/heard last night in SE Denver
I just stood in awe at my open window watching strike after strike hit my neighborhood. At least half a dozen strikes were within a few hundred feet of my window. The storm preceded the rain so it was perfectly quiet except for the thunder, and man was it intense. I just stood there laughing and cheering Mother Nature. She puts on quite a show!

Most of my family is in Kansas, I know they'll do everything they can to stay safe. My parents are pretty obsessive about storm safety.

21. Latest report
It looks like you and I have been moved to the high risk category. I can't remember the last time that happened, it has been a while, it is not used often. It is not expected here until around 9PM so unless there are storms ahead of this, and there are likely to be, I will be online to talk in between chores. You are not going to your FIL's? Hang in there. Pack a picnic dinner and just go to the basement and make a night of it. This is supposed to continue all night. Storms are fast but that dry line is not. :(

If anything gets hit I hope it is my old house. We can't sell it. A nice wipe out would benefit us nicely :), just kidding, well kind of kidding. If it hits my new house I will shoot myself because as much fun as it was to get it done I can't stand the thought of driving back and forth to the farm again for the next 2 years.

I will be in and out if you need to talk.

31. Does your TV weather station
have streaming weather video? This is fabulous, I had never seen it before. They are covering the state so if you don't have that you could watch this. http://www.wibw.com/weather Just click on streaming video at the top. I had never seen this before and it is really good if you are worried and want to have real advanced warning. They are covering a tornado warning way out west, Stafford County I think.

Maybe you should consider yourself in bigger company than I thought. I love the storms and am generally not terribly nervous about them but today has me shook up. It feels really creepy outside, has all day. It looks really creepy outside, has all day. Now I am watching the video and the dryer alarm went off. I almost dropped my laptop jumping up. Good grief. :eyes:

we can be buddies tonight! I just found out that my husband is also going to be at the gig my sons are playing in so I am going to be home alone :(. It is not looking good up North of you, it is bad enough that I am not getting any news about your area. Radar looks close.

I feel like Dorothy outside. I can lean as far as I want and the wind holds me up! It is all being sucked into the storms I think. I have to go figure out what I am going to do with the livestock. Now I am nervous. LOL, I can take it when I have company but being alone just creeps me out.
