I got furloughed for a couple of months.

Today it went up by $10.75 to a record $138.54.

What the hell is our government doing about it?

1. Pouring money into Iraq, which increases the deficit
which make us dependent on the generosity of strangers to buy U.S. Bonds, which weakens the dollar.

A barrel of oil is traded in dollars. The weaker it is, the higher the cost.

Still, I think that it is a bit misleading to concentrate on the absolute number - $10.75.

Percentage-wise, it is less than 10% and I suspect that we have seen similar jumps previously.

6. This has been the biggest 2 day gain in the history of the NYMEX.
I'm looking to see if it is the biggest percentage gain.

2. oh nothing
I remember when my house was worth something, I could afford to fill my gas tank week to week and pay all my other bills. I remember when we had a surplus and unemployment once popping 1/2% in just one month. I remember when we had a Democracy instead of being ruled by assholes that steal elections when they lose. I remember alot of good things before Fuckface became President

5. I'll go ya one better..........
I remember when gas was 17 cents a gallon and if there was a gas war with the neighboring station, I could get it for 11 cents a gallon. On any Saturday night in 1965, the girls and I would chip in, get 50 cents worth of gas a cruise town all evening. And if we ran out, well, we had probably picked up some cute studs by then who would by another 50 cents worth.

8. PHUUUUUUU,...UCK!!!! Was it THAT low?
I remember being really po'd that gas had risen to $1.43 as I was relocating across country in 2000. It seriously effed with my budget!!!

I also remember my employer shutting down travel,...when prices hit $3/gal,...nearly two years ago.

:banghead:

The energy barons are flexing their muscles,...with NO PATRIOTISM involved, whatsoever.

15. in 2001 I rented a moving van to move my stuff and tow my car
Nowadays I'd have sold/given away all my furniture, though I probably couldn't afford to replace it either. How can people afford to move these days?

And when the Pacific ocean wasn't a giant vat of acid.

I hope they do nothing about it.

11. In the short term, not a whole lot they can do about it
In the long term there are many steps that can be taken to reduce our dependence on oil. If we had just listened to Jimmy Carter 30 years ago, there would be no energy crisis.

14. Carter was right 30 yrs ago
Yet there are still people - even here on DU - who buy into the GOP propaganda that he was a bad President.

16. I remember the last time we were in this mess
in 1976, 77. Gas was 50 cents a gallon. You could only by your gas on Thursday with the last 2 digets of my license plates. I capped off for under a buck and the gas station guy got all pissed off. It really scared me. I have never had a big car since that time, I have been seeing this coming ever since I heard the name Bush again. It's way worse then I remember back then, they have taken this country in to the crapper and don't give a damn because they will be rich forever on some island that they bought.
