If Jim Webb is VP would Hong Le be the first minority Second Lady?

Webb is now married to Hong Le Webb, a Vietnamese-American securities and corporate lawyer. Hong Le was born in South Vietnam and escaped to the United States after the fall of Saigon. She grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana. Hong Le and Webb have one child together, Georgia LeAnh, born 2006. Hong Le also has a daughter, Emily Nguyen, from a previous marriage.<2> Webb speaks Vietnamese.

Sen. Webb has not been my first choice for the Vice Presidential nomination. However, It is clear from a wide variety of insider sources that he is near the top of the short list of those being considered.

Rasmussen Reports rates him as probably the potential candidate who would stategically add the most to the ticket:

At first I was a bit skeptical of him. But after taking a closer look, I have to admit being somewhat impressed.

My most important reason from my point view is that his writings while teaching at the Naval War College in Monterey, California reveal that he is a foreign policy realist and pragmatist and thus not the sort to rush into ill advised military interventions. Equally important he shares with Sen. Obama the sense of importance with opening dialog with adversaries and making a sincere effort at diplomacy in resolving conflict.

But, just how liberal is he on other issues? I would have to say, more than I thought:

I have managed to catch parts of two interviews, and he expressed a point of view I had never encountered before -- very in-depth, very articulate, very well thought out. The first time I found myself saying, Who is this guy? The second time I told myself I really have to go find his books.

I'm a very mixed Irish-American, of Roman Catholic and not Protestant heritage. I was born and raised in California and Hawaii -- so every thing he said felt like new information to me.

He would balance the ticket. I like Wesley Clark better, but Obama might feel more comfortable with Webb.

Obama. I am haunted by the fear that Obama will pick an LBJ type to balance his ticket. Maybe he should pick a woman after all. He'll make the right decision.

the library doesn't have that one. It's clear that his thinking changed after he served in the Reagen administration. Someone who can adjust his or her opinions in light of new info is exceedingly rare. His 1999 book, The Emperor's General, discussed prosecution of war crimes as a major theme. One way or another, Bush and buddies are going to be in trouble January 22, 2009!

One of the best, early, Vietnam novels. Excellent read.
