Pew Research: sinking GOP voter identification demographics
Edited on Sun Jun-08-08 01:24 PM by featherman
Older article from March 20 but one to keep in mind entering the GE. Here is a couple of tidbits:

"The Democratic Party has also built a substantial edge among independent voters. Of the 37% who claim no party identification, 15% lean Democratic, 10% lean Republican, and 12% have no leaning either way.

By comparison, in 2004 about equal numbers of independents leaned toward both parties. When "leaners" are combined with partisans, however, the Democratic Party now holds a 14-point advantage among voters nationwide (51% Dem/lean-Dem to 37% Rep/lean-Rep), up from a three-point advantage four years ago."

snip/
"The share of voters who call themselves Republicans has declined by six points since 2004, and represents, on an annualized basis, the lowest percentage of self-identified Republican voters in 16 years of polling by the Center."

1. very great news
I think Pew Research polls are a bit more trustworthy than most but I could be wrong. That is great news. I especially love this paragraph:

The balance of party identification in the American electorate now favors the Democratic Party by a decidedly larger margin than in either of the two previous presidential election cycles.

From the looks of the graph, Obama has definitely managed to draw alot of Independent voters. :bounce:

4. yes, I saw that number after I posted and was amazed
so just goes to show ya that Pew Research does do good work. Also goes to show ya that if we all work hard and not take anything for granted, actually get all those newly registered, young voters out there to vote, we will be victorious.
However, word of caution, now that the primaries are over, watch the media throw out their 1-3 word sound bites like "inexperience" etc. I've already seen that start on NBC (any GE owned), as well as CNN.

I think we will need a "Soundbite Watch Squad" to call them on these tactics that helped the Republicans in both previous elections.
