John McCain gets tax-free disability pension
The disclosure of the Navy benefit for injuries incurred as a Vietnam POW may raise fitness questions.
By Ralph Vartabedian, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
April 22, 2008
Sen. John McCain has long said he is in robust health and is strong enough to hike the Grand Canyon, but he also is receiving what his staff Monday termed a "disability pension" from the Navy.

When McCain released his tax return for 2007 on Friday, he separately disclosed that he received a pension of $58,358 that was not listed as income on his return.

1. He deserves it, too.
His politics suck, but his service record is still something to honor.
We can beat him on the issues, we don't need to go negative with personal attacks.

2. He is 100% disabled and yet fully employed. How does that work?
"Certain types of military and veterans pensions are either partially or completely tax-exempt, depending on the seriousness of the disability. In McCain's case, the exemption is 100%."

This is his retirement pay that is considered 100% tax exempt because he is 100% disabled.

I'm 30% disabled and only a portion of my retirement pay is exempt. It is money I would normally get for retirement (after a full career in the military) but they mark part of it as tax exempt. The government does this so they don't have to pay you both for your retirement and your disability pensions.

And Mcbush is against giving better benefits to our military.

3. It was not listed as income because it is tax free.

4. McSame might deserve the pension, but
he's a no-good damn hypocrite to take that money while voting with Bush to screw veterans.

Many veterans who became wealthy stopped taking their disability pay so more money would be available for vets who truly need it. Not McSame.

5. I agree he deserves it, but should refuse it. The money does not honor him,
as a wealthy man to whom that amount is nothing. There are vets to whom a fraction of that amount per year would change their lives.

6. Right?
If McSame were to need medical treatment, do you think he'd book a room at Walter Reed?

He's a millionaire, yet he receives free healthcare coverage, and gets a disability check from the gov't.

I've been waiting to use this "smiley"... :wtf:
