I JUST SPOKE WITH JOHN CONYERS
Edited on Mon Jun-09-08 09:43 PM by snot
I was just putting a blog post together and calling all the appropriate reps re- Rep. Kucinich's articles, and when I called Conyers' no., I got him. He said, "John Conyers." I said, "REALLY"? I thanked him for his work, said I was calling to ask him to support Kucinich, etc. He actually asked for my phone no. to call me back. I said I understand you have to prioritize.

PLEASE CALL -- I think/hope Congress would like nothing better than a tidal wave of public support!

Here again are some helpful nos., and links; thanks to everyone else who's helped put them together.

John Conyers, to ask for his support: 734-675-4084.

Rep. Dennis Kucinich's office to thank him and commend his courage, foresight, integrity, and patriotism, at 202-225-5871.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi's office to ask her to at least stay out of the way: San Francisco office: 415-556-4862; DC office: 202-225-4965.

Your own House reps to ask them to support the process; you can find them (and your senators) through http://www.congress.org/congressorg/home/ ; or e-mail them through https://forms.house.gov/wyr/welcome.shtml%20 .

It can't hurt to contact the media and ask them to COVER this. You can do this through http://www.congress.org/congressorg/dbq/media/ .
Then pls go rate this up on YouTube:

39. I KNOW, they will not.
I was told so by the staffer, started repeating every talking point we are familiar with

Didn't let her finish, read the oath her boss took and told her.. you just lost my vote and that of my husband

THere was silence on the line... and then she asked specific info to note that I was in the district

My note tonight included a reminder of that conversation and that I will vote against her in every primary and GE from now on, or until she does her freaking job!

It's a damn safe seat, so my protest vote will not do much, except let me sleep at night.

And I believe on standing on one's principles... and in my best dreams we wake up after the november election to find out that many of these dinos were replaced by third party candidates, who won on the protest vote agenda.

The only way they'll get it is close elections or loosing.

Conyers' record so far.. ("Strike 08" blog)

(See chronology)

(...)

One blogger writes that the reason Conyers gave for not pursuing impeachment now is that “it would jeopardize the chance of a young, excellent man running for the White House,” referring to Senator Barack Obama. Sam Stein reports that “Conyers offered a strong suggestion that he intends to consider legal action against Bush and Company once they leave office.” Stein quotes Conyers as saying “We can win this thing and go get these guys after .”

Conyers, like Senator Joe Biden (D-DE), offered that if Bush attacks Iran he should be impeached. It is disturbing to watch seasoned leaders, who have already witnessed this president wage a war on a country preemptively and on false pretenses, decide to “wait and see” rather than preventing more carngage by removing the rogue president for crimes already committed.

Activist David Swanson pulls no punches, “The congress that we elected in 2006 to end the occupation and hold Bush and Cheney accountable immediately decided to pretend to attempt to do its job for two years in hopes of winning more seats in 2008 by opposing the occupation and Bush and Cheney.”

“That this would mean hundreds of thousands of unnecessary deaths, two years off the clock on global warming, our nation and others in ever greater danger of attack, and the continued erosion of our rights - these things didn’t faze Reid or Pelosi,” charged the activist. “The pretenses they’ve put up have included hearings, letters, subpoenas, contempt citations, and bills recriminalizing already illegal and unconstitutional actions. They’ve also pretended to try to pass all sorts of other legislation, such as a children’s health care bill, knowing full well that they would be vetoed or signing statemented. It’s a two-year election campaign at taxpayer expense.”

Regarding impeachment and the elections, Swanson contends “Forcing John McCain to choose between the Constitution and the least popular president and vice president ever would be a gold mine immediately apparent to any entity capable of playing offense. The Democratic Party only plays defense.”

Conyers and Nixon

Congressman Conyers might well be served, and the nation in turn, by recalling his 1974 article published in The Black Scholar entitled “Why Nixon Should Have Been Impeached.”

The 45-year-old Conyers wrote, “In calling him to account, we also reestablish the proper parameters of presidential conduct. It is essential, therefore, that the record of our inquiry be complete so that no future president may infer that we have implicitly sanctioned what we have not explicitly condemned.”

He closed by remarking, “Impeachment is difficult and it is painful, but the courage to do what must be done is the price of remaining free.”

“When once a republic is corrupted, there is no possibility of remedying any of the growing evils but by removing the corruption and restoring its lost principles; every other correction is either useless or a new evil.” Thomas Jefferson

ambivalence. Hence my own toward his. I like him a very great deal, but I'm not holding my breath for the outcome we'd all like to see.

73. This is the culture of D.C. that Scott McClellan so rightly criticizes.
Obama promises he will change it. This is his chance. Let's see whether he and those who want to see him elected really want change for American or just want to a career change for themselves.

The impeachment issue is a litmus test of the sincerity, the honesty and the courage of members of Congress. Many of them talk the talk but don't walk the walk. Thus far, Conyers has been one on their side.

There are three reasons to back impeachment now that were not there before the 2006 election or even a few months ago. The first is McClellan's confession about the Bush administration in his book, the second is new information proving very high level involvement in instituting the torture procedures for prisoners we hold and the third is the report of the Senate Intelligence Committee. There was plenty of evidence before those three new pieces, but the new evidence enforces the already compelling argument for impeachment. Conyers must impeach Bush. It will help Obama, not hurt him.

Obama is arguing that McCain is four more years of Bush. Well, OK. Let's let the American people know why four more years of Bush would be an abomination. This is not just any election. This is an exorcism. We have to get rid of the secrecy and dishonesty that is haunting the Bush White House before those lovely, innocent Obama children move in. (OK so this last sentence if over the top, but you understand what I mean. So many young, innocent kids support Obama including his own two. To allow Bush to leave office with his glory intact would be a crime in and of itself.)

64. I called Conyers
You sure that's the right number? There was no outgoing message on it or anything. But I did leave a message.

Kucinich's mailbox is full.

70. Email to My Republican Representative
The Honorable ____________:

There was a time in my life when I had respect for the Republican Party and felt pride, as any American should, in its achievements. It is the party of my parents and though I have come to have different political leanings than my parents, like them, the Republican party still deserved and received my respect and admiration.

Sadly, this is no longer true.

It is unlikely that you were present on the House floor when David Kucinich presented the Articles of Impeachment of George Bush. The floor seemed to be empty. Nevertheless, I am sure that you are well aware of Representative Kucinich's efforts.

I would like to call your attention to Article 20: Imprisonment of Children. If true, this is to me, the most reprehensible act of a President who has thoroughly defiled what it means to be an American. Please take the time to seriously consider all thirty five (35) articles of impeachment. If any one can be proven, there is no question that the President should be removed from office, if not imprisoned.

This administration has destroyed the reputation and legacy of the Republican Party. My son, who is only six, talks endlessly about the tragedy of Iraq and how we must find a way to end it. It is a depressing subject for me and I rarely bring it up. He and his friends; however, seem to understand what kind of world they have inherited and are obsessed with finding a solution. As these children grow and are able to understand the full import of damage George Bush has wrought on the American way of life, I cannot see how they will feel anything other than revulsion for George Bush and his party. You can be certain that my son understands Article 20.

You and your fellow Republicans have an opportunity to salvage some of that legacy and restore your reputation. It is time to clean house. Act in support of the Articles of Impeachment and urge your fellow Republicans to do the same.

Sincerely,

__________

74. Thanks for this post.
I agree. The imprisonment of children is the most horrible of the crimes of the Bush administration.

As pro bono work, I used to visit children in the Juvenile Hall in my hometown. The conditions at the Juvenile Hall facilities (I visited a couple of different ones) were relatively comfortable considering the crimes committed by these children, which ran the gamut from nonviolent to very violent crimes. To think of a 15-year old kid at Guantanamo after seeing the she shame, fear and distress in the eyes of some of the children at the facilities I visited is just unbearable.

Yes, children do commit crimes even serious crimes, but they are, nevertheless, children. They do not understand fully the repercussions of their actions. They have not developed the judgment they need to make wise decisions. They are often responding to forces in their environment of peer pressure when they commit crimes. Guantanamo is not the answer, regardless of how hardened they appear to be.
