Marine in Iraq case jailed for refusing to testify

Marine accused in Fallujah death jailed for refusing to testify before grand jury

A Marine charged with murder in the 2004 death of an Iraqi detainee during combat operations in Fallujah was jailed Thursday for refusing to testify before a federal grand jury.

Sgt. Ryan G. Weemer's attorney told the judge that his client opted not to testify for fear of self-incrimination. The sergeant did not speak before U.S. District Court Judge Stephen Larson found him in contempt of court.

Weemer, of Hindsboro, Ill., can be held for up to 18 months unless he decides to testify or until the grand jury is excused. He was to be held at either a federal detention center in downtown Los Angeles or a San Bernardino County jail.

2. I saw a lot of Marine ads in the last few days
Watching the NBA Finals, for some reason there are a lot of ads for the military. In the Marine ads, there are lots of stone-faced men in snappy uniforms. None of the ads seem to feature massacring civilians and going to jail for refusing to testify. Lots of emphasis on honor, duty, and defending freedom. And yet, when the civil authorities are abridging my rights to assemble peaceably and petition the government for redress, I have yet to see the first soldier, sailor, airman or marine arrive to defend that freedom.

Are we being lied to?
