One more golf thread.
Because bigwillq requested it: :P

I'm not much of a golf fan. I generally consider golf courses to be an extravagant waste of water and use of herbicide and pesticide. I live a couple of miles from a golf resort, and I can really see the appeal.

When my son, who golfs, visted me this spring, we worked our way through the putting course. I really had fun, and found myself wondering if there could be a more environmentally friendly way to golf.

Of course, I couldn't afford more than the putting course. At $80 a round on one of the big courses, not counting golf clubs, it's out of my league. I'd rather have my horses. They're friendlier than the wicked curves, bumps, sand pits, etc. I found on the putting course.

BTW, who is this "Tiger" I keep hearing about? ;)

2. That is a good question.
Many things are wasteful in one way or another; not just sports. I mean, many of us are on our computers it seems 24/7 for work or pleasure.

What about people, even Democrats, who have huge houses that must use tons of water, electric, oil?

I think we all can still continue to enjoy the things that could be wasteful and hazardous by committing ourselves to help the crisis by conserving in other ways. At least that's what I try to do.

:hi: I really enjoyed this golf thread! ;) :)

8. I watched a deal on Vegas courses...they use toilet water
Basically. They take waste water from the city, do whatever they do, then route it to the golf courses. A city like Vegas can't waste good drinking water on golf courses.

9. That's a good use.
A desert city like Vegas has all those swimming pools, fountains, etc. to waste water on. ;)

I was thinking about the Mirage.

A most extravagant display of waste water, lol.

15. Apparently it's pretty well cleaned
The show was on discovery science or something like that. Basically it was about making drinking water from Lake Meade, then taking waste water, raw sewage, and the process they put it through to run irrigation, fountains, etc... Pretty fascinating.

16. I remember reading, some years ago,
about a system that took the gray water from local residents through a greenhouse filtering system and produced water that could be used for irrigation. I've often wished there were a simple way to do that at home.

12. You can play a municipal course here for $12 late on weekdays.
A lot of courses are irrigated with reclaimed water these days.

14. That's the kind of course my son plays on.
Around here, golf resorts for the more affluent abound. There is a huge economic gap; the affluent, and the rest of us. For anyone not affluent, this region is referred to as "poverty with a view." Natural beauty abounds, but wages don't meet the cost of living.

I live about 2 miles from one resort, and another is going in across the little rural highway. My little rural community is worried about what will happen to our wells when another resort starts pumping groundwater for golf courses. When the current resort was built, many older wells crashed. It takes about $25,000 to dig a new well and get it functioning around here.

They aren't all as pricey as the closest; with 23 local courses, you'd think prices would come down to keep competitive.

None of them are anywhere close to $12, though.
