No sexism left in industry, nope, none at all
“We urge everyone to come along to the event, celebrate our world class capabilities and put the UK electronics industry back on the map,” added Simon Payne. “The event is far more than a showcase of products and services, it is a major networking opportunity, a place to interact face-to-face and cross-fertilise with peers in the industry.”

The XJTAG girls will be welcoming visitors to this inaugural event. The XJTAG team will be on stand C61.

But yes, very tacky. Almost as bad as the old Rigid Tools calendars. I still can't take then seriously. Nothing but Craftsman or B&D for me! I wouldn't have a Rigid tool if you gave it to me.

8. The event's big feature is eye candy for men
so I must assume there aren't any heterosexual women who are electrical engineers. Or at least they're assuming that. Or they know that isn't the case but they made their big feature eye candy for the men anyway because women engineers are irrelevant or something and this is more important.

Pretty much true. I work for a major electronics corporation and there just not that many female engineers. And it's not for lack of trying; the company has programs ranging from recruitment incentives to scholarships to try to woo engineers-any engineers--but generally speaking it is just not a field that attracts a lot of women.

49. And the sexist atmosphere -- and the obliviousness to these issues even on
the part of non-offenders -- is part of the reason.

My daughter chose a different engineering major (where she's doing work that overlaps with EE and physics) in part because of the pervasiveness of the negative attitude toward women in the EE field.

For one thing it's assuming that all of the visitors will be male.
Most women would be turned off these greeters. Where are the cute guys dressed up in skimpy clothes?

For another, it's using women's sexuality to sell a product to men. Which is ubiquitous, of course.

Sex sells. Is this news to you?

"Sex sells" does NOT automatically equate to sexism...or are you suggesting that the company is ACTUALLY saying that women are only good for looking at and have no brains to actually create/manufacture/use the products they are advertising?

No, I don't think so...I think they are saying "HEY!!! LOOK AT MY ARSE!!! - oh, and while you're here, check out what's for sale"....

29. Actually the notion that "sex sells" has been demonstrated to be false in many cases
My degree is in marketing and in various projects I studied many types of advertising and which ones were successful. Sexy models tend to increase sales in certain segments, obvious ones being personal grooming products. But there has been a tendency to over-use attractive women (and now men) to such an extent that it's not really as effective as you might think. When you remember the "hot babe" in the ad or promotion, but not the product she's selling, then it hasn't succeeded.

Edited on Tue Jun-17-08 03:39 PM by Mountainman
Seems to me sexism appeals to and exists on both sides. Being attracted to sexual imagery is a part of the procreation drive IMHO. That's why it captures your attention like it does. I would think that you were dysfunctional if it didn't capture your attention.

In a department store, in a mall I was at, that caters to young women, there was a male model greeter at the door in a pair of jeans and nothing else. Works both ways doesn't it?

Darrell David Rice, age 34, has already been in jail since 1998 because he pleaded guilty to a charge of attempted abduction of another woman in the Shenandoah National Park. The hate crime legislation has been called into use because he allegedly told officials that he deliberately targeted women for harassment and assault because "they are more vulnerable than men."

There was a dismembered girlfriend in Houston who was grilled, a pregnant woman found dead in a field her boyfriend showed to cops, missing joggers and little girls and wives and girlfriends all over. Men own women and can dispose of them when they are through, but it's harmless according to a lot of posters. Just good clean fun, nowhere near as dangerous as racism or homophobia. How dare the PC scaredy cat society complain about sexual harassment and stuff, you know!

25. What are you selling?
Because unless you are selling something specifically geared to men (and by that I mean something like male enhancement pills) you are deliberately ignoring and possibly offending half your potential consumer base. Women make the majority of household purchases, and more often than not, are the decision makers. And yes, women buy cars, boats, hi tech items, and tools. Those "babes" may drive horny guys to your booth but I bet the vast majority of them don't end up buying anything.

38. Of course. It's beauty products. That's why I asked you what you sold.
It makes sense to use attractive women to sell personal grooming items to women. It doesn't necessarily make sense to use sexy models to sell tools or software. When I see "Booth Babes" hawking items that have nothing directly to do with appearance I conclude that the marketers have no imagination and also that their product or service might leave a lot to be desired. Not to mention that many of their potential customers are going to be offended. Believe it or not, even dour humorless feminists have money. And you can't always tell who we are by looking at us.

But you still hire models to decorate your sales area. You simply dress them for the product. (And in fairness there is the occasional use of male models as well)

The objection I assume is the use of woman to help sell your product not the fact these woman happen to be so particularly adept at it

28. Strohs beer got sued for Sexual Harassment because
Of their Swedish Bikini Team ads.

In 1991, the Center for Science in the Public Interest pronounced the ad "unfair, misleading and irresponsible." Female employees of the Stroh's Brewery (now Pabst) filed a lawsuit against their employers stating that their ads (which portrayed women as "giggling, jiggling idiots who have large breasts and small minds") helped foster a work environment that encouraged sexual harassment.

http://www.tvacres.com/sex_news_swedish.htm

Those lawsuits have diminished considerably do to what Lawyers call the Lewinsky Defense, but for most of the 80's and 90's they were daily headlines. One Attorney in Minnesota made a nice living filing these suits. It has been said that she never had to go to court because the companies would usually settle.

51. I have more of a problem with this than hardcore porn. (I actually have no problem with porn)
Fantasy is for jacking off not industry bonding. This is unprofessional. How many drunk fucks are going to say to their coworkers: God Mary I wish you looked like that!!! Why are all the real "girl" electrical engineers dogs like you???? Or worse "Aw, don't be pissed! You're as hot as they are. If you dressed like that you'd get our attention too!"

Yes, I'm making these examples up, but it's nothing I haven't heard before in similar contexts.

58. Exactly. And how many of these male techies -- the straight ones, anyway --
would like a friendly greeting by men in comparable attire?

59. It's not really comparable because they're with their buddies and can laugh it off.
A better example might be living in an all gay world where gays and lesbians have power and being forced to stick a 5 in the speedo of a go-go boy and a group of co-workers or boss saying "Can you imagine Marty's bitty dick in those speedos?" And another saying "I try not to!" And then everyone cracking up and Marty waiting and hoping they'll get back to the topic of electrical engineering. Then one says "We're just joking with you Marty...You know we love you."

61. Did you see the article in the NYTimes a couple weeks ago about women
in scientific and tech fields? At least they're recognizing the problem, but it is discouraging that sexism is still so rampant.

63. Honestly, I think it's something that is best stopped by other men. Not all of them like it.
Ending homophobia is really going to help. Men will be able to say "George is an asshole for what he said to Nadine and I don't think that shit is excusable." Instead of calling him a fag, which will have no power, they might argue a little, hang their head and maybe next year the guys will say "I'm not so sure about going to that thing with the titty girls. Obviouslly not all the guys here can handle it..." It's a start.

72. Much like the totalitarian aspects of our democracy: so numerous it's overlooked...
...it becomes woven into the fabric of the corporate culture, taken for granted, and worse yet, over the course of time, many of these unquestioned, diminished qualities become the new exalted norm. {What's the problem? :shrug: }

"The monumentalism of fascism would seem to be a safety mechanism against the bewildering multiplicity of the living. The more lifeless, regimented, and monumental reality appears to be, the more secure the men feel. The danger is being alive itself." ~ Klaus Theweleit, Male Fantasies

64. I was going to point out some of the plethora of fallacies and asinine assumptions,
but then I noticed you are from FloriDuh. Don't worry, we liberals are always ready to make allowances for the developmentally challenged.

75. There was a "news segment" on M$NBC this morning featuring Mario Lopez
either nude (properly pixelated, of course,) or scantily-clad recreating People magazines memorable "pin up" poses over the years. The two 40-something female hosts were tittering like school girls.

I'm sure that's different somehow, of course...

78. Men attending these functions should be offended as well
It implies they are losers that only qualify for paid escorts. Unless they fit that description, I suppose.

As a technical woman attending some of these events, let me just say how sexist and degrading this is. You are either confused with these sex peddlers, and therefore incapable of comprehending technology, or you aren't female enough. It is just another way men like to maintain control over business and it is complete crap.
