I Propose That in Three Hours We End the MTP Tim...

Deathapallozza......I think most of what has been posted here on the DU has been disrespectful and in bad taste. Russert has been gone almost a week now and is resting in the ground. At this point any further silly post about Russert reflect on Skinner and the DU badly. Russert had some good quality's.

Just like Hillary it is time to move on.

1. Naaa, let's keep it going. It just pisses some people off beyond all comprehension.
There's lots of things in this life to get all worked up about, but perceived excess coverage of Tim Russert's death is not one of them. If it is for some, then they might want to spend some time reflecting upon what is important. It's really been the ones bitching who have kept things going.

2. You've put your finger on what's been driving me batty . . .
About the whole thing. Russert was a middling celebrity and little more. If someone else at that level died, say . . . Michael Douglas (not to wish anything on anybody) . . . it'd be a two-day surge of ink and electrons and then nada.

This almost reaganesque deification of a talk-show host is clearly deranged, and evidence that the media is completely out of control and utterly unserious.

These people are wacko, and they have an outsized role in determining what happens to the rest of us. THAT's what bugs me, not the imagined failings or virtues of Tim Russert (or for that matter, the failings/virtues of posters to DU).

4. So NBC and MSNBC Don't .........

.....have a right to mourn their own.....did you pay for the airtime used.....I say let them have the time to mourn an icon a person who helped develop the network.

Though I will agree if tomorrow they want to spend more than 4 hours re hashing the funeral then yes they have crossed the line.

11. What amounts to a state funeral for a news reader?
Edited on Thu Jun-19-08 06:00 AM by MrModerate
Sure they get to huff on their own balloon if they want to. Although as most NBC affiliates are sucking at the public teat with their use of *my* broadcast spectrum, I reserve the right to criticize them when they -- IMO -- run off the rails.

Icon? Whew. If you say so. One of many, in my book.

But whether he was a one-trick pony or the second coming of Edward R. Murrow, he was on-air talent. Not a great scientist or intellectual or philanthropist or healer or philosopher or artist or writer or leader or . . . anything.

Am I displaying a prejudice in favor of well known figures who actually do something useful? Perhaps so -- my own biases showing, I guess.

My point is that discretion and balance seem to have been totally abandoned by today's media. It's reaganophilia all over again: a huge and largely phoney outpouring of simulated grief and undeserved praise being heaped on an unimpressive talent who, on balance, probably did more harm than good.

I have no problem with people dealing with legitimate grief when a friend, relative, or colleague dies unexpectedly, but to insist that I consider it more than a very localized tragedy -- in a world filled with much more gross tragedies -- is both creepy and annoying.

3. So it was disrespectful to discuss him before the funeral and now
that the funeral and memorial service are over it's time to move on... are you now or have you ever been a White House Press Secretary for the Bush Administration?

5. I refuse to answer that question on the basis of my Constitutional 5th amendment protection
btw, I've deleted at least 20 Russert threads today, so I'm not going to be contributing to the madness anymore.

so here's my last tribute, thanks to the Wiz:

so long, Chucky. Hope you're shaking hands with your pal Saddam down there:

8. Washington will build a monument to Russert, the greatest propagandist since Goebbals.
Take a look at all the stuff named for Reagan and Bush One and you'll see what the corporatists who run the government have planned for Russert. Like Reagan, he will be praised endlessly -- in inverse proportion to the amount of good he did in life.

9. I didn't respect Russert when he was alive...
I thought he was a dissembling, republican-ass-kisser who always took the easy route and enabled their deceit. His death hasn't changed my opinion of him one bit. I still don't respect him. He did nothing to earn my respect.

I thought the excessive mourning for this man was ludicrously and embarrassingly out of proportion to his importance to all but a handful of his fellow enablers. If I were the parent or spouse or child of a dead or disabled Iraqi vet whose plight was largely foisted upon them by RussertCo and then ignored by them, I would be even more bitter at this wild outpouring of grief upon the death of a fat and comfortable TV show host who held cozy court in a TV studio every week.

Let the repugs mourn him, I don't.

I don't see how stating that violates the rules of this board.

10. Another moralizer.
welcome to spot #257 on my Ignorant List.

If you're so much holier than the rest of DU, maybe YOU need to move on. Find a place that's not so "disrespectful and in bad taste", and you can discuss all of Russert's "good quality's" there.
