Nancy Pelosi is a disgrace
Edited on Thu Jun-19-08 07:07 PM by kpete
Nancy Pelosi is a disgrace:

Tomorrow, we will be taking up the FISA bill. As you probably know, the bill has been filed. It is a balanced bill. I could argue it either way, not being a lawyer, but nonetheless, I could argue it either way. . . . It is again in Title II, an improvement over the Senate bill in that it empowers the District Court, not the FISA Court, to look into issues that relate to immunity. . . . So that will be legislation that we take up tomorrow. We will have a lively debate I'm sure within our caucus on this subject and in the Congress. It has bipartisan support. I commend Steny Hoyer for his important work on this legislation, working in a bipartisan way.

http://www.salon.com/opinion/greenwald/2008/06/19/telecom/index.html

What a dishonest statement. The bill "empowers" the District Court to rubber stamp the fact that the President asked the telecoms to break the law. And Pelosi is proud of this. What a disgrace.

She gets more embarrassing the longer she stays House leader. Personally, I'd cry for joy if Kucinich or Wexler somehow managed to finagle the House Speaker position (I know, pipe dreams, but still...)

what makes you think he will after? And what good would it do then? His (and Clinton's) silence on this is disturbing. We have just gone through six months of a sham primary. Neither of them is a Democrat.

140. Is it true Pelosi blackmailed Conyers not to impreach?
Edited on Fri Jun-20-08 04:21 PM by marekjed
On June 11 Mike Malloy was talking about a Raw Story article (no link, and Mike himself said he wasn't sure if the story was true) that Pelosi had blackmailed Conyers with regard to impeachment. Apparently she threatened Conyers that ifg he proceeded with any impeachment-related hearings, she would remove him as chairman of the House Judiciary Committee.

The next day a caller to Mike said he called Conyers' office and they confirmed.

If that is true, it's just another piece in the growing heap of circumstantial evidence that some of the top Dems are most likely protecting themselves as they are protecting the Bush Crime Family. Personally I can't see how it could be otherwise.

On edit: here's one source: Slate.com, Aug 21, 2007:

The prospect of an impeachment inquiry by the House judiciary committee would concentrate the minds of the president and vice president wonderfully on obeying rather than sabotaging the Constitution. But Speaker Pelosi has at least figuratively joined hands with the White House in opposition. Emulating the Queen of Hearts in Alice in Wonderland, she has threatened the removal of Michigan Rep. John Conyers from his chairmanship of the House judiciary committee if an impeachment inquiry were even opened, according to reliable congressional chatter.

Hill Briefed on Waterboarding in 2002
In Meetings, Spy Panels' Chiefs Did Not Protest, Officials Say

By Joby Warrick and Dan Eggen
Washington Post Staff Writers
Sunday, December 9, 2007; Page A01

In September 2002, four members of Congress met in secret for a first look at a unique CIA program designed to wring vital information from reticent terrorism suspects in U.S. custody. For more than an hour, the bipartisan group, which included current House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), was given a virtual tour of the CIA's overseas detention sites and the harsh techniques interrogators had devised to try to make their prisoners talk.

Among the techniques described, said two officials present, was waterboarding, a practice that years later would be condemned as torture by Democrats and some Republicans on Capitol Hill. But on that day, no objections were raised. Instead, at least two lawmakers in the room asked the CIA to push harder, two U.S. officials said.

17. Yes.
And as Turley said, Bush was very smart to bring them in so they could share the blame. Now they find themselves possible accomplices in a war crime. A few, such as Rockefeller and Pelosi, knew about the torture and other criminal acts, yet did nothing or said nothing. Now, they are being literally blackmailed by this White House, at the expense of all of us. They both need to go. That would be best for all concerned.

Put Nancy on Vince Bugliosi' list of Bush conspirators who should be tried for the murder of our young men and women sent to attack Iraq, a sovereign country where probably a million Iraqi's were killed. Another $187 billion just passed to continue the slaughter under her watch as Speaker of the House. All we need is one courage prosecutor. In the meantime, a coalition of of liberals and conservative interests are running ads in Steny Hoyer's and Bill Carney's districts to dump them for engineering the Democratic bail out/assault on the Fourth Amendment.

TO Nancy Pelosi,

NO RETROACTIVE IMMUNITY FOR THE TELECOMS and if DC Court is an improvement over FISA, WHY?

FISA should be just fine in that there would have to be a reason to obtain a warrant and that's what WE the People are asking.

What do you have against the 4th Ammendment?

DON'T DO IT Nancy. Please. DO NOT let HR 6304 pass as written. You can NOT allow the telecoms and *ush to get away with these crimes.

If you do, you are clearly not the best person to be 3rd in line should something happen to the other 2 bozos.

You can't condone this kind of bulldozing of our civil liberties and say you stand for the American people in any way shape or form.

Speaker Pelosi,

It once again appears that the Democrats are afraid of something. I want you to tell Dick Cheney that he is to turn over his meeting minutes with 'big energy'. If he fails to comply, then I would like you to hold him in contempt of Congress.

Then I would like you to impeach the President. Democrats appear as cowards. Please fight that impression by going after Bush/Cheney. They are the cowards; they are guilty of war crimes and crimes against the citizens of the united states.

Treason is not a victimless crime, in the mythical government of the people, by the people, for the people the people beg to be abused, who then are the victims?
-------------------------------------
"In the end they will lay their freedom at our feet, and say to us, "Make us your slaves, but feed us." They will understand themselves, at last, that freedom and bread enough for all are inconceivable together, for never, never will they be able to share between them! They will be convinced, too, that they can never be free, for they are weak, vicious, worthless, and rebellious."

I remember wondering if she was railroaded into "picking" ol' Steny. I do remember that Nancy seemed to want Murtha in Steny's position, but things didn't quite work out that way. It's all well and good that she wanted Murtha, but when that failed, it was a red flag for me. It's still just as red, as Nancy waves the white flag to bu$hCo. She can go to hell as far as I'm concerned. Impeachment not on the table? Fuck you nancy.

53. Led by Ms. Pelosi, the Democrats failed to fulfill their 2006 mandate
They were supposed to end the war and protect us from further abuses by Bush.

In the last 24 hours, they have capitulated on more funding, domestic spying and telecom immunity.

Taking impeachment off the table was a big, big mistake. Messrs. Bush and Cheney were hell bent on amassing power in the executive branch and violating the law to do so. I do not believe even the threat of impeachment would have brought them into line; only the execution of the threat would have.

By taking impeachment off the table, Ms. Pelosi nullified the 2006 mandate the Democrats received from the voters.

Edited on Fri Jun-20-08 01:03 PM by Cleita
that the Republican candidate only got less than 8,000 votes in that district with no one running against her. An overwhelming majority voted for the Democratic candidates and the opposition to Pelosi was very weak. I really don't think a vote for the independent candidate, who is a much stronger candidate, is going to help the Republican candidate because she has such a small constituency and she will give Pelosi a really hard run for the money. Here's the link to the election results and see if you agree with me.

I hope DU changes their position on this. We really need to back her.

Regardless of one's opinion about Sheehan, she is not running as a democrat. This website was founded by democrats who support the democratic party. If Sheehan wanted our support she should have run in the primaries. If there are DUers who want to support her there are other websites where one can go to support non-democrat candidates. If we are to start supporting 3rd party candidates, perhaps it won't make a difference in Pelosi race but how do we justify it if we actually helped put a republican in office because of our split support for a non-democrat candidate? Bitch all you want about Pelosi but she is still 1000% better option than any republican out there.

How would a site called 'Democratic' Underground justify its existance if they supported a 3rd party candidate that might feasibly elect a republican? Our election system is favorable only for 2 parties. Sure an occasional person gets thru like Lieberman (who was a lifetime democrat who got strong republican support when he went independant) and Sanders (who is from a small start and Sanders was another who spent decades building up his respectability to make him electable as a US Senator).

The only way DU would endores a non-democrat is if there are no democrats running on the ticket. Bernie Sanders was the rare exception because even the DNC knew better than to run a democrat against a very popular 3rd party candidate and the DNC fully supported Sanders. However when Lieberman bolted the DNC stood behind Lamont.

What we all should be fighting for is election reform. Or perhaps independants need to examine Bernie Sander's career and build their political ambitions from the ground up.

98. I won't be joining you in the primary.
After the November election I'm registering as an independent. I find that I have no say in the primaries anyway unless I lived in Iowa or New Hampshire. My candidates are already preselected by then and and as far as Congress is concerned the local Democratic Party doesn't usually run a candidate against the incumbent Republican and the one time a candidate stepped up to the plate the local Democratic Party hardly supporter her. So there is no point in it to participate in primaries.

I know it's against DU rules to advocate for another candidate - but Nancy has done nothing in her time as Speaker to lead this party or the country forward. She pays lip service to the issues of the day and then runs to get back in lock-step with the Bush gang.

I'll come right out and say it - Nancy doesn't deserve the D that she wears beside her name and she doesn't deserve support from true Democrats. It could be argued that anyone - regardless of party affiliation - would be a better leader than Nancy.

Edited on Fri Jun-20-08 02:02 PM by RedLetterRev
and most certainly not wanting to be perceived as someone who would dispense with rules when they got to be inconvenient -- but here goes. In a situation where an elected official with (D) after their names consistently acts in a manner that goes against core principals, or acts in a manner erosive to the Constitution of the United States, perhaps middle ground would be to call for a board referendum on continued support of that official.

"My party, right or wrong" is what got the Republic party in the sorry shape they're in. My instinct is to abide by the board rules and not badmouth a sitting Democrat, but my head is blistering from the continued complicity of a certain number of "blue dog" ("yellow coward" or "red handed") Dems in the destruction of the Constitution. I was raised to believe (and still do) that the Foundation Document is that which makes America "America" -- not a flag, not a Bible, not a lapel pin, not a pledge or a Chinese-made ribbon-magnet from Wallyworld. If the Constitution is destroyed, then that is exactly the same as destroying "America". I cannot sit idly by and allow that to continue. Further, I cannot support any elected official from any party who does not abide within the Constitution, the rule of law, and their oath of office.

I will accept the Admins' and Mods' decision. But my ears are smoking at today's House vote to include amnesty for lawbreaking corporations and a lawbreaking WH.

(edit: Republic "party"... if they're going to needle us with "Democrat Party", I'll hand it back to them.)

128. Jefferson. This is how you should proceed
As Paul Wellstone used to say, ORGANIZE, ORGANIZE, ORGANIZE.

The point of getting organized, of course, is so you can be an effective citizen lobbyist.

Corporations and special interests are not the only ones who can lobby our representatives. We need to organize together and lobby them ourselves.

I hope this helps. I highly recommend training seminars by either Wellstone Action Group or Democracy for America. They will train you how to do everything, from building a base around an issue, to staging earned media events to doing the actual meetings with your representatives.

The more of us that do it the more powerful we all become collectively.

147. Thank you! I was hoping to hear how a Speaker loses their position as Speaker.
Pelosi will win re-election most likely. I hope to see someone competent and honest fill that spot from our party. Thanks again for the info.

132. Of the 105 Dems voting FOR this damn thing
Edited on Fri Jun-20-08 03:35 PM by Phred42
ALL but 6 of the Blue Dogs voted YEA (29)
and 16 (at least) were DLC voted YEA for a total of 55 from these to anti-American groups combined.

The Democratic party MUST rid itself of these vermin if it is EVER going to stand for anything except bending over for the REICH

130. Something DID happen that we don't know about yet
You are absolutely correct. Something happened behind closed doors that caused all these Representatives to betray us like this. We just don't know what it is yet.

I called Pelosi's office earlier and asked why they voted for the bill and they just transferred me to the comment line.

Something stinks here.

131. No, WE understand
Because we follow news. And information. And logic. But the many headed Pelosis know most people don't. My god, her district in consistently liberal, she won the primary by 90/10 - and she supports FISA? If you eliminate all the OTHER possible reasons (there are NO good ones), then whatever is left must be the answer (Sherlock Holmes, I believe?). Thus, the only answer: she and most Dems who voted for this bill are corrupted.

and so are the Democratic voters in her district who voted for her instead of Golub in the primary.

They could have replaced her.

They didn't.
