Subject: Evacuation drill tests city's emergency preparedness

Good afternoon Mark:

Living in Northeast Philly this is the first I've ever heard of this type of evacuation drill. Although the article pertains to a power outage, it seems they are preparing the entire country for something.

Like a team practicing drills, Mayor Nutter and his senior managers yesterday were put through the paces of how they would handle an evacuation of Center City high-rises.

Everett Gillison, deputy mayor for public safety, added that Philadelphia was working with surrounding Pennsylvania counties and communities in South Jersey to develop strategies for the mass movement of people. "Philadelphia is not operating in a vacuum," he said.

2. They'll wait until Transformers 2 finishes filming.
Saw all the trailers yesterday and today. I work in a Philly school and we do this awful thing called "Shelter In Place" that is a drill for the possibility of one of the nearby chemical plants having a spill. We didn't do it this year (thank god- it is horrible) but last year we practiced a bunch of times. Just a little scary that the possibility of a spill is such that we actually have to have a drill for it.

6. We actually need this in South Jersey, and probably in Philadelphia.
Remember that we're flanked by the Atlantic Ocean and the Delaware Bay. It's not unheard of for major hurricanes to smash into us, even though a big one hasn't hit full force in almost half a century. (Floyd and Gloria, when they hit us relatively recently, were very weakened.) Back in the 1940's, the borough of Avalon actually lost its six northernmost streets to a major hurricane.

Unfortunately, so much time has passed that Jersey isn't prepared for a Category 5, and Philadelphia would be in worse shape if it came up the Bay instead of the Ocean. We need an emergency plan ready to go and we don't have it.

7. Why would this upset you?
We need to be prepared for natural or man-made disasters. Things like this help save lives.

Global warming = increased storm activity.

8. You know, I am wondering if this is connected
Last Feb., Wells, Nev. had an earthquake, it was early in the morning, prior to the earthquake people were woke up by a loud sonic like boom.
When the geologists got there and were taking questions, the town folks asked about it. They had no answer.
Then when there was an earthquake in Reno/Sparks, there also was a loud sonic like boom, same from what I heard about in Walnut Creek, Ca.
I don't think there is any news about this, I heard it from my family and friends in those areas. It just didn't seem...natural? I guess...

13. My mom and dad grew up in California.
I remember Mom telling me that you could hear sounds before an earthquake. That much rock moving even half an inch is going to make some sort of noise.
