Flying to a football game or other event, forget flying home the same day on United

Crazy. I hope others don't follow or start earlier, I'm planning on going to the All-Star game in New York, fly in watch the game and fly out.


United Airlines to require minimum stays from Oct.

NEW YORK - United Airlines said Friday it will start requiring minimum stays for nearly all domestic flights beginning in October. It is also raising its cheapest fares by as much as $90 one-way.

The second-largest U.S. carrier said the moves are among a number of changes it is making to combat record high fuel prices. The Chicago-based airline has been among the most aggressive in the industry in pushing fares and fuel surcharges higher in recent months, and its latest policy could prompt other carriers to consider following suit.

Starting Oct. 6, most United fares will require a one- to three-night or weekend-night minimum stay, spokeswoman Robin Urbanski said.

The new rules, which apply to nearly every ticket, are bound to be unpopular with business travelers who prefer to catch a flight out early in the morning so they can make it back home in time for dinner.

Major carriers scrapped most minimum-stay rules — put in place largely to discourage big-budget corporate travelers from snatching up the cheapest seats — years ago, although a number of airlines have been tightening up restrictions and tacking on fees in recent months as the price of fuel has soared.

All they SHOULD care about is filling the empty seats! Could this possibly be a token gesture to the hotels that have been severely hurt by fewer flights and higher fares?

And really how is that different to an Airline from say changing planes..... :wtf: ????

I pay the real fare drop the nickel and dime crap and the bullshit rules.

if they implement and continue this policy. I used to fly United quite often and quit doing so about year ago when I had several flight cancellations in a row. I will never book with them again.

As you point out their service has been in the shitter for some time now.

My son is a single father with full custody of his 5 year old daughter. The child's mother lives several states away. Twice a year my son makes two round-trips to deliver and pick up his daughter when she has a three week visit with her maternal family. The mother does not have visitation rights, but my son thinks it's very important for his daughter to not be cut-off from her maternal grandparents and mother, in the process.

He flies to Detroit and the child's mother drives 100 miles to meet them at the airport and take the little one back to her place. My son then catches a flight right back home. He does the same three weeks later, to accompany the 5 year old back home. Twice a year! Four round trips for him and two for his daughter.

Staying over, even overnight, would mean renting a car and a hotel room, both coming and going, twice a year. The way he does it now, is already a real expense for a high school teacher, but he absolutely doesn't want her flying alone.

should buy nested round trip flights in opposite directions (regardless of this new rule) - it will save him money.

You can still fly on the same flights but it's going to cost more. Much more. Don't ask me the logic behind this but just saying.
