A West Texas grand jury meets next week to hear testimony in the criminal investigation of the polygamous sect whose West Texas compound state authorities raided in April, according to newspaper reports....(bit more)

Jerry Strickland, a spokesman for Attorney General Greg Abbott, declined Friday to say anything about the grand jury, including whether witnesses have been called.

"Grand jury proceedings by law are secret proceedings, and therefore we cannot and will not discuss issues surrounding those proceedings," he said.

On May 5, state District Judge Barbara Walther of San Angelo named Mr. Abbott's office special prosecutor in the case after District Attorney Steve Lupton of San Angelo said Mr. Abbott's office should "assist with the prosecution of any criminal cases that may arise" from searches the judge authorized at the ranch.(bit more also)
