Another 9/11 "would be a big advantage" for McCain, says Charlie Black
McCain adviser: Another attack on the U.S.' would be a big advantage' for McCain.

Earlier this year, after former Pakistani prime minister Benazir Bhutto was tragically assassinated, pundits speculated that the shocking attack may have benefited Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) politically. Now, McCain's chief strategist, Charlie Black, tells Fortune that the "unfortunate event" of Bhutto's death "helped us." Asked if another terrorist attack on U.S. soil would help McCain as well, Black told Fortune that it would be "a big advantage to him":

The assassination of Benazir Bhutto in December was an "unfortunate event," says Black. "But his knowledge and ability to talk about it reemphasized that this is the guy who's ready to be Commander-in-Chief. And it helped us." As would, Black concedes with startling candor after we raise the issue, another terrorist attack on U.S. soil. "Certainly it would be a big advantage to him," says Black.

4. Here's my take on that: If we were to have another 9/11
1. It indicates that Bush and therefore Bush-lite are unable to protect us from terrorist attack.

2. It really adds strength to all the theories of LIHOP and MIHOP!

but the American public doesn't seem to apply logic in such situations.

If there is a bad hurricane this summer or other natural disaster such as an earthquake, the Bush administration will be roundly denounced as incompetent.

24. Exactly - 9/11 was the greatest day in George Bush's political life
It was his high tide and green grass, when he mounted a pile of rubble with his megaphone and when the newspapers of the world were writing that everyone everywhere was in solidarity with America. And Bush exploited 9/11 to the max, hawking photos for the 2004 campaign that allegedly showed him on Air Force One on that day, doing his job and also running TV ads showing the Twin Towers and New York firefighters. Everything was downhill for Bush after that day.

6. Black is right
The media would be falling all over themselves to rally 'round the flag, blame Democrats for not completely suspending the Constitution and not naming Bush dictator-for-life, and would start beating the war drums for Iran... (wouldn't matter if it was Saudis again, they'd still go after Iran)

10. I Think The Opposite
I think it will be large caliber ammunition to demonstrate that all the chest thumping and war making accomplished nothing. And, the media will not ignore those comments this time, because the media's short attention span, and Bush's irrelevance means they no longer have to acquiesce.

I think it would be disasterous for the GOP.

8. Black now says he regrets his comments
So we don't have to talk about this anymore, and nobody has to ask McCain a bunch of nosy questions about his campaign advisers imploring terrorists to save their political bacon by launching another attack.

11. I know
Just how when McCain says it is sometimes difficult to be proud of his country, it's okay and understandable, but when Michelle Obama says it, she's an America-hating harridan.

13. The Early Word: Terrorism and the Campaign
http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/06/24/the-early-word-terrorism-and-the-campaign/

<snip>
The Obama campaign is rolling out Sept. 11 Commission member Richard Ben-Veniste in a conference call this morning, presumably to keep the issue on the front burner. For his part, Mr. Black issued a statement on Monday expressing regret for his comments and Mr. McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee, condemned them.

The terrorism issue could cast a shadow over a day when both candidates are in the Western United States talking, once again, about energy policy.

Should be interesting

What he said is far more reprehensible than Rev. Wright, et. al. especially because he is part of McW's team, not just a tangential figure.
