Nearly 100 Million - ONE HUNDRED MILLION - Americans are or are near being diabetic.
The cost of that is staggering. It was just mentioned on MSNBC.

This is due in huge measure to the lack of health care and the lack of incentives toward wellness. Instead, we live from crisis to crisis. Personally and nationally.

2. High fructose corn syrup is almost like crack as your body craves more of it
once you start to regularly ingest it. And it's hidden in lots of prepared food, including 12-grain bread.

19. I Don't Know About That
Drinking soda with corn syrup makes me crave soda that is sweetened with real sugar.

Corn syrup sucks.

25. Green TV had a thing on this last week. - it's ALL modern corn not just HFCS
They have hybridized every type of corn grown to contain much more sugar and much less protein and nutrients. Almost every single commercial use of corn requires corn that is as high in sugar as they can get it. It kills the farm animals they feed it to. I think they said they can only keep animals on feed lots for about 6 months because the same corn that putting bulk on them is also killing them. It makes their meat MUCH less healthy for the humans eating it.

Not to mention that modern corn, as such a high percentage of the human diet, is killing us too, but since we feed on other substances it just takes a little longer.

It's no secret that obesity, diabetes and heart disease of a populace raises in direct proportion to how much modern corn products they consume.

4. Source? At least some of the 100 million cause their own condition by choosing poor diets and
failure to exercise.

18. You should know by now that the corporate media whores LIE their a$$es off!
This sounds like a scare tactic to get people to go to the doctor in order to make some money for the medical industry.

You and the rest of DU want change? Turn those bastards off and stop letting them control you!

13. You are very wrong about this
Type 1 is caused from a virus and type 2 is hereditary and can be caused by obesity.
A lot of really fat people are not diabetics and I am NOT fat but still have type 2

5. I don't want to be one of them, so I am keeping my weight within
Edited on Tue Jun-24-08 03:26 PM by kestrel91316
10-15 lb of my ideal (admittedly almost model-slim), eating whole grains rather than refined grains as much as possible, avoiding all trans fats, avoiding all HFCS, trying to walk MORE.

I need to prevent medical problems because I can't afford to get sick (no medical insurance currently, and even WITH insurance, illness can bankrupt a person).

20. Fortunately, good health and old age run in our family.
My grandmother was supposedly borderline Type 2 diabetes but all she ever had to do was watch her weight, and died of complications of a fall and chronic lung disease at about 86. Never any heart disease or strokes or diabetes.

7. And today the high fructose corn syrup pushers
ran a full page color ad in the Washington Post claiming their stuff is healthy and natural, just like table sugar.

(Doesn't lead to obesity or diabetes, oh, nossiree)

Methinks they're getting very nervous. A full page color ad in the Post costs a hello of a lot of money.

9. I'm betting that soon goes the way of transfats.
I'm very aware of it, personally, and find it, as a practical matter, to be pretty much unavoidable. I think that full page ad is, as you say, a sign that the industry is worried. A little more unfavorable research and they're outta business.

Good riddance, I say.

27. Let us hope so
I know someone who is allergic to corn and she has a hell of a time finding processed foods that don't contain HFCS. Funny thing, tho. She's not overweight although she's what they used to call "a healthy eater."

And if those don't have much effect then why don't we bring back cigarette ads and show people guzzling hard liquor?

17. Pesticides are implicated too
You exposure to pesticides occur when your neighbor applies them, they are applied in schools and other public buildings, they are in imported clothing and in our air, food and water.

21. I'm not surprised at all. Look at the ingredients in cans of vegetables
at the grocery store and half the time they contain sugar or high fructose corn syrup. The so-called "whole grain" cereals fed to kids are the same crap with a new twist. People work so many jobs they don't have time to prepare decent meals and rely on fast food to feed the family. As for kids and exercise, most only exercise their fingers playing computer games. One hand for the game, the other hand for the Cheetos.

24. I blame my type-2 Diabetes on...
genetics (minor factor) and living on an unhealthy diet for over 40 years...got it under control now (proper diet, daily exercise, and oral meds)and hope to someday be able to quit the oral meds.

Still...a reliance on processed and fast foods are harsh on the health...

26. I think the reporter exaggerated the numbers a bit.
According to the report 24 million Americans already have diabetes, and another 57 million are pre-diabetic. That is about 23% of the US population. The number of reported cases has risen by 3 million over the past 2 years. It won't take long to hit 100 million at that rate. The health care related costs are $175 billion a year.

I have type 2 diabetes, which is under control through medication and diet. My A1C, or 3 month average is at 5.3, which is actually lower than the average non-diabetic. I am one of the lucky ones.

Anyway, here are the links to the MSNBC story:
