Don't use Oil of Olay exfoliants
Hi everyone,
I don't use these products, but my sister sent me a Slate article about plastic beads being added to a number of skin products. These are unnecessary (they can use seeds, pumice, etc.) and they cause harm to ocean life.

Scrubbing Out Sea Life
Exfoliating plastic beads feel good—unless you live in the ocean.

21. That's EXACTLY why I quit using them. Animal testing. ANYTHING made by Procter and Gamble...
...P & G does animal testing - I quit using their products because of that.

8. i do enjoy an "exfoliating" scrub,
but if not a non-harmful product like those mentioned in the op's article, salt or sugar in smashed cucumber and lemon scrub is plenty effective, and unrefined sea salts and coconut oil are great for softening and moisturizing. right from the fridge.

9. Sunscreen is definitely a necessity.
Having lived in South Florida and knowing many people with skin cancer including my mother, I won't walk outside without sunscreen.

10. i think msongs
was referring to the silliness of exfoliating- especially with environmentally unsafe plastic beads.

i agree though- a friend of mine was diagnosed with superficial spreading melanoma a few months ago- she had a spot on her thigh that she ALWAYS put sunscreen on before tanning, and the doctor told her that the years of application to that one scarey spot saved her life.

5. saw this last week- i used oil of olay "UV proterction" for years
since i was a teen, as i grew up watching mom slather it on her face. this is just one more reason i stopped using olay products.

i decided to find a chemical free or at least more natural product. a cousin recently turned me on to burt's bees (i'd only seen their lip goop and didn't know they had such a variety of products).

olay contains a cinnamate, which is a chemical (along with parabens, benzphenones, and a couple others i don't have time to research) that has been linked to coral bleaching- they cause viral infections in symbiotic algae, which die off once infected, and which results in the loss of colors on the coral reefs ("white skeletons"). so doubles on the oceanic damage this co. causes to the ocean!

these chemicals are also endocrine disrupters- watching so many people around me fight cancer lately has made me much more wary of the products i use and foods i eat.

and as another poster mentioned, olay products are animal tested. i strive to avoid products that rely on cruelty.
