Update on Helen Thomas's recovery
Edited on Thu Jun-26-08 09:35 AM by KzooDem
The other day I saw a thread that mentioned Helen Thomas's recent illness and people were wondering about her recovery. http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x3514492

I knew nothing about her illness, so I emailed her niece. It sounds like she's slowly but surely getting better. Here's her reply:

"How kind of you to write me and inquire about my aunt. I heard all
the flowers were breathtaking... so many of them...she really
appreciated receiving them. Aunt Helen is getting better... what a strong and resilient lady.
Thanks for your concern."

2. Thanks for doing that and thanks for the good news.
I forgot all about Susan being her niece. She was one of my favorites for news when we lived in Mi.

Hopes for a speedy recovery to a brave and spunky lady! I found this article on Editors & Publishers that talks about her recent illness:

NEW YORK Washington, D.C. legend Helen Thomas has been off the job for the past three weeks suffering from a gastric infection that has caused her to miss her weekly column for Hearst Newspapers, according to Hearst D.C. Bureau Chief Chuck Lewis.

Lewis said Thomas, 87, was hit with the illness on May 18 and has not written a column since May 14. Her weekly columns are distributed each Wednesday to all 500 clients of Hearst News Service.

"She is being treated for an infection and is on leave," Lewis told E&P Monday. "She became ill and has been recovering ever since. We expect her back, but I am not sure when. We have been moving a note that she is away and her column will resume when she does."

Lewis said recent conversations with Thomas indicate "she is getting stronger and we expect her back, but not this week."

Thomas garnered fame as the former UPI White House correspondent who first began covering presidents during the Kennedy Administration. She left UPI in 2000 for Hearst and has been writing a weekly column ever since.

Thomas did not immediately respond to requests for comment Monday.

22. Get well soon, Helen. You're on the short list of folks I really want to witness Obama's swearing-in
When President Barack Obama takes the oath of office next January, I hope his grandma Toot is there along with Senator Ted Kennedy in the guest box -- and in the press box, front row, Helen Thomas, dean of the White House press corps.

What an occasion for all of them, what a moment in history.

Hekate

23. I just want her to get better.
I don't even mind if she never asks another word of a government official--elected or otherwise. She's earned her right to rest and be content. I just want her better. Please.

Love to you for all you've done, Ms. Thomas. Love.
