1. My local mall already looks like a ghost town. So does the main thoroughfare on a usually busy
Fri or Sat night. It's a vision of things to come.

14. mine too...
bars, banks, and second hand/thrift stores. And yet there is new construction, like a bigger bank.

5. Yup, and just the economy in general. I live on Cape Cod and usually you can't get into any
good restaurant without at least an hour's wait. Now, you drive along Main St. in Hyannis and half the tables
in the cafes are empty.

Discretionary income seems to have flown out the window, along with our civil liberties.

10. gotta say, while not good news... most of those chains overextended-

it is the small privately owned business in small towns that are are more concerning.

of course here in western MA they are trying to spin it by saying the economy is not hitting us as hard as elsewhere (because we were impoverished before the turn of the economy!)

15. I love watching CNBC
These fools at this very moment begging their flock not to sell short, that its all in your head. All the while glancing up at the big board with that bewildered look in their eyes as the Dow is plummeting to new lows and the oil ticker keeps ticking upward. You got to love it!!

16. This is a little mis-leading
Not that retail is not doing poorly now, but Home Depot is opening 36 new stores this year. Eddie Bauer is opening 13. These companies are not necessarily going out of business.

17. I thought COMPUSA was reopening a few stores.
Including one near me. So I checked: "We're really a new company but bought the name. We don't honor the old COMPUSA warranties, but they can be handled a different way. We do sell warranties and have our own tech shop."

I will check them out because I always liked the stores that specialized in computers, with staff who knew something about them and shops that could work on them.

18. And yet their is a huge amount of construction in the nearby larger towns in our area. And some of i
redundant, such as Lowe's and Home Depot, plus several more local hardware stores/lumber yards, I worry that this is development for development's sake. I have read stories of huge tracts of land elsewhere being developed with McMansions that either never get finished or never sell.
