AT&T Billing Site Jokes About Company's Participation in Warrantless Wiretapping

"Ms. Suspicious has nothing to hide."

By Cory Doctorow

Reid sez, "I, unfortunately, have an AT&T cell phone. I check my bill every few weeks. Today, I went to log in, and was greeted by a terrific new advertisement for their online billing system. It's as if their marketing department thinks that warrantless wiretapping is funny or something. " Link

3. I doubt that was the intent, but it certainly does look very, very awkward right now.
I can't believe they approved this.

4. on the phone with an AT&T rep, I mentioned ATT's wiretapping and she told me,
"This was authorized by the US government." I guess that's their official line now. My response was, "Oh, you mean the criminal war profiteering government of George W. Bush and Company? Well, please tell your higher ups that I don't want this service because I don't want to further support a company that engages in monopoly who's in cahoots with the Bush Admin."

She was pretty speechless at that.

10. This keeps getting posted and I don't make the connection to warrantless wiretapping.
I just see a cheesy ad.

Methinks that Liberals are a bit touchy on the subject.

Which they should be, but I don't see a joke about warrantless wiretapping here.

13. I think you may be right
I see it as luring those who are afraid of paying bills online.

I can see how it can be misconstrued but I think that was their intent.

26. Quote from you: "...liberals are a bit touchy on the subject."
By saying this, I assume you are not a liberal and that warrantless spying on you by your government is okay? Only "liberals" believe in the Fourth Amendment...I guess.

27. Way to avoid the point and twist it to your own ends.
Bill O'Reilly couldn't have done better.

I also said that they should be a bit touchy. Ok?

16. LMFAO! I'm Amazed Some Really Think That Had Anything To Do With Warrantless Wiretapping LOL
Some of you, even those that I adore, need to get out a bit more.

It's beyond obvious that it is a marketing campaign towards those who have fears of online billing. Nothing more, nothing less, perfectly benign, not making fun of a damn thing.

Too funny what some will pick up and run with though!

23. But it says "hide".
Not "fear". She "has nothing to hide" seems like a spying reference to me. If it was just about online billing she would have nothing to fear.

I do believe, although it's awkward and scrambled, that they are referencing online wire-tapping or spying.

As if the whole FISA/wholesale wire-tapping thing was just urban legend that can now be safely joked about. That only a goofy character called Ms. Suspicious ever worried about.

It's just a dumb ad. Why would AT&T want to bring up wire-tapping or spying? That would be even dumber.
