Waxman Going To The Source (Fitzgerald) To Catch BUSH/CHENEY In Thier Cover-Up Game

What Is Michael Mukasey Helping Dick Cheney to Cover Up?
By: emptywheel Monday June 30, 2008 8:18 am

Attorney General Mukasey is helping Cheney and Bush hide the fact that they played insta-declassification games that may have--though they'll never tell--included leaking Valerie Wilson's identity.

Apparently, DOJ responded to Waxman's subpoena for the Bush and Cheney interview reports by telling Waxman to go fuck himself (h/t WO).

On June 16,2008, having been informed in writing by the Justice Department that it would not produce the interview reports of the President and Vice President, the Committee issued a subpoena for those interview reports, as well as other responsive documents not previously produced, with a return date of June23,2008. On June 24,2008, the Justice Department informed the Committee by letter that it would not comply with the subpoena and would not "provide or make available any reports of interviews with the President or the Vice President from the leak investigation."

Waxman appears to be calling DOJ on whatever grounds DOJ invoked when refusing to comply with the subpoena, because he's asking Fitz for clarification on whether or not there was an agreement between him and the Barnacle Branch that would shield the FBI reports from any exposure.

To assist the Committee in evaluating the Department's position, I request that you produce the following information to the Committee no later than July 3, 2008:

1. Documents sufficient to show the date and terms of all agreements, conditions, and understandings between the Office of Special Counsel or the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the President of the United States, regarding the conduct and use of the interview or interviews of the President conducted as part of the Valerie Plame Wilson leak investigation.

2. Documents sufficient to show the date and terms of all agreements, conditions, and understandings between the Offrce of Special Counsel or the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Vice President of the United States, regarding the conduct and use of the interview or interviews of the Vice President conducted as part of the Valerie Plame Wilson leak investigation.

I'm guessing, but it appears that Mukasey has claimed that Fitz made some kind of agreement with Bush and Cheney, and that agreement prevents him from turning over their interview reports. BUT, as Waxman notes, these reports were among those that Fitzgerald determined "were not protected by Rule 6(e)."

Mukasey says there are grounds not to turn over the interview reports, Fitz has already said that reason is not grand jury secrecy, so now Waxman is going to the source (and demanding a 4 day turnaround) to find out whether Fitz believes there are other grounds not to turn over those reports.

8. How is it that they are absolutely unaccountable?
Who pays their fucking salaries? I hope they spin that web of deceit and lies so tight that they never extricate themselves from it. Oh and a trip to the Hague would be nice too. Barnacle Branch, I like it.

12. I'm sorry but this is bullshit
if he was serious he would issue contempt charges against the DOJ. This is getting fucking stupid, this administration has been stonewalling using every tactic available to them because they know the dems in congress won't touch them.

I am so fucking disappointed with the democratic party I have honestly lost all hope. Fuck them.

15. I think I would be much happier if I started watching American Idol instead of following the news
ignorance in bliss. Knowing what is happening in this country is enough to drive you nuts, I honestly think at times I'd be much happier if I just didn't give a shit like most americans don't.

22. Big Bad Waxman
It surprises me that there are still those out there who are naive enough to believe this has any meaning. Like most of our representatives, Waxman is a paper tiger and an invertebrate. Nothing will come of this because he simply has his pants full. It is so disgusting to see these people go through the motions and give us lip service. I wish, oh how I wish, that they would be voted out of office. A good start would be Waxman, Conyers, Pelosi, Biden, Reid, Boxer, and Mr. Dangerous himself, Leahy. Please feel free to add to the list.

23. A PAPER TIGER AND AN INVERTEBRATE!! I love that one.
While I do not agree with your list in toto I agree that we need to vote a lot of these folks out for some fresh, progressive blood.

Pelosi and Reid are at the top of my list. But then we might have to deal with Hoyer and whoever's next in line in the Senate (who is?). I'm willing to risk it though.

Maybe I don't understand the system and I'm putting too much blame on the leadership but it seems that some of our old guard might go through spinal regeneration if we had some strong progressive leadership. I also think a lot of the chickenshit comes from the rank-and-file knowing they'll get knee-capped by the leadership if they get too feisty.

P.S. I don't understand having Boxer on the list. She's one of my heroes.

25. Thanks for keeping track of all this --- the mound is soooo high . . .
and thanks to Waxman . . .

I was reflecting recently that when we've had government in trouble -- especially re war --

we had very brave people who came forward --- MLK, Jr. most especially who helped Americans

see how wrong VN was if they didn't already --- Bobby Kennedy and his compassionate march

to the end -- Eugene McCarthy and his courage in the anti-war movement --- George McGovern

who gave us one more chance to change things ---

Love to them all ---

PS: I should also mention Malcolm X and his brillance, his humanity.
