People may gripe about shelling out $4 for a gallon of gas, but they'll happily hand it over for two scoops of butter pecan in a waffle cone.

Local custard vendors feared the economy might make people less willing to buy those summer treats. But so far it's been a stellar season.

(snip)

"Ice cream tends to be recession proof," said Lynda Utterback, executive director of the National Ice Cream Retailers Association. "It's a comfort food. And it's a family event.

"My theory is, people aren't going on vacation, so they're hanging out around town and doing stuff locally," said Nate Kern, owner of Storheim's Frozen Custard, 1860 W. Mason St. in Green Bay. "Rather than going to the (Wisconsin) Dells or Door County, people are going to the Neville (Museum) or Bay Beach Park, and that is good for us.

3. i'm giving it up out of protest. breyer's reduced the size of their cartons again...
down to 1.5 qts. they used to be half-gallon, then they went to 1.75 qts.(and had the utter gall to refer to it as "space-saver packaging"). i used to be good for 3 cartons a week- now i buy zero.

4. Yep. Tip of the iceberg.
America's Shrinking Groceries

American supermarkets are epics of excess: it often seems like every item in the store comes in a "Jumbo" size or has "Bonus!" splashed across the label. But is it possible that the amount of food Americans are buying is, in fact... shrinking? Well, yes. Soaring commodity and fuel prices are driving up costs for manufacturers; faced with a choice between raising prices (which consumers would surely notice) or quietly putting fewer ounces in the bag, carton or cup (which they generally don't) manufacturers are choosing the latter. This month, Kellogg's started shipping Apple Jacks, Cocoa Krispies, Corn Pops, Froot Loops and Honey Smacks containing an average of 2.4 fewer ounces per box.

Similar reductions have recently happened or are on the horizon for many other products: Tropicana orange juice containers are shrinking from 96 ounces to 89; Wrigley's is dropping its the 17-stick PlenTPak in favor of the 15-stick Slim Pack; Dial soap bars now weigh half an ounce less, and that's even before they melt in the shower. Containers of Country Crock spread, Hellmann's mayonnaise and Edy's and Breyer's ice cream have all slimmed down as well (although that may not necessarily be a bad thing).

5. Damn, now you have gone and done it. As long as NOBODY
talks about ice cream I am ok. As soon as some idiot brings it up this time of year (it's back up over 100 today) I get started craving it. Specifically, any ice cream with chocolate. Preferably lots of it.

What I REALLY want is an old-fashioned hand cranked ice cream freezer like my grandfather's. You know, the kind you put the ice and rock salt in, and crank away. My sister and I used to get to do the cranking until it got stiff, and then my dad or Grampie would finish. And then we got to lick the paddles (but you had to let the whole thing sit and cure for a little while before packing into freezer containers).

Lehman's still carries them but they ain't cheap, and I really don't need to be eating ice cream, lol.

6. I don't know... I'm thinking I may lose a few pounds...
When a pint of ice cream is frequently $4 or more..... I may at least resort to healthier treats like frozen applesauce or frozen fruit in the summertime.

9. It has been on sale almost every month lately at the local grocery
Edy's 1.5 quart size flavors 3/$9.99. Since I consider this premium ice cream and my pregnancy has caused me to have ice cream cravings. I try to take advantage of this when I have room in my freezer.
