2. Yeah, but these numbers are not good
why?

Usually after a fall like Friday's you see an uptick

We went all the way to 50 or so, and it was falling fast when the bell came

Will see about tomorrow

7. You forget we're near month-end
A lot of people are holding their money back to see how 2Q results look over the next week or two. Such profit taking (or loss-cutting) is common enough around quarterly reporting periods. I am not reading too much into it. I do think we're in recession and it'll continue to drift downwards (as I said a few weeks ago, the next psychological floor is 10,000). But then we already knew we were in a bad economic situation, so this is about what we should expect.

9. I'm a little unclear on why you expected an uptick, then
I thought it would slump more, to be honest; I'm a little surprised that it ended the day essentially flat. A lot of people seem to be holding their breath at the moment, which is understandable under the circumstances.

10. Because the pattern has been an uptick after such a great fall
that is why

And the fact we didn't is not good, IMHO that is

3. I thought for sure we would have 200+ day.
Your right, this does not bode well for the rest of the week. Stay away from open windows.

5. Best to do little walking in the financial district
of any city. Drive carefully in the McMansion district, they're likely to be drunk.

No, today barely managed to stay even. The rest of the week might not look nearly as good.

6. I'm going to do my best Eddie Murphy from "Trading Places" and tell you what I think happened today.

This is reposted from the SMW thread:

Up until about 3:45, the Dow was up about 50 pts. on very light volume. It dropped into negative territory in about 10 minutes. Then, at 3:55, it rose again slightly to end positive. I believe that the largest investors, knowing that the future's looking pretty dire, but also knowing that no major news/reports were due out today, waited on the sidelines hoping for a sucker rally. They waited until the last possible second and then sold so that they could wring at least a small profit out of the day and cut their loses for June. Then, somebody else (the PPT?) saw what was happening and wanted to ensure that the headline tonight would be "The Dow finally closed up today, reversing its latest trend" rather than "The Dow collapsed into to red again today."

Can I have Dan Ackroyd's job now?
