As we begin the work of counteracting those attacking General Wesley Clark (Ret.) for daring to say that John McCain's experience in Vietnam doesn't qualify him to be the Commander-in-Chief, let's not forget that Clark, too, returned home from Vietnam on a stretcher after being shot four times.
John McCain served honorably, he endured pain that few in this country can imagine, and his life was turned upside down--forever. But he is not the only American to have suffered in a war. Clark returned with grievous injuries, as have thousands of troops who've served in Iraq and Afghanistan.
John McCain's service to the nation during Vietnam was admirable, but it made him no more qualified to be President than any other young officer who has returned from Iraq paralyzed from the neck down.
John McCain knows things about war that civilians can never know. He has sacrificed more and suffered more than most Americans ever will. John McCain is a war veteran. Just like the rest of us.
The media needs to understand this.
