Okay, I have been following this story and this makes no sense. An off duty cop saw this guy taking pictures of kids in a parade and this guy was questioned, he showed them his tapes (which a previous article said were not sexually suggestive) but the cops got a warrant, searched his house and found child porn?

I am thrilled they got a potential child molester off the streets, but does this mean that we can't take pictures of children at public events anymore?

Child porn charges coming for parade photog
By JOE LAMBE
The Kansas City Star

Johnson County District Attorney Phill Kline said this morning that child pornography charges would be filed today against a 56-year-old Olathe man arrested by Lenexa police after he videotaped girls at the city’s July 4 parade.

An off-duty Lenexa officer attending the parade with his family called in police after seeing the videotaping. Police found child pornography at the suspect’s residence.

The man will be charged with four counts of the sexual exploitation of children related to the pornography, Kline said, which included computer images. The investigation continues and the state charges could be upgraded or the case may go to federal authorities, Kline said.

There is no evidence that the pornographic video includes local children, Kline said.

1. I'm always very cautious when photographing kids...
...even being a woman. Usually, I try to ask a parent if it's okay for me to take their child's photo, or sometimes if I'm feeling particularly daring I'll use a telephoto lens so I can get the shot without anyone knowing, but I always feel kind of guilty afterwards -- which is ridiculous, I know, but people are so touchy about this kind of thing.

Photographers have to be really careful these days. Remember the trouble RagingInMiami got into for taking pictures of the cops?

2. One video? And just how "pornographic" is...
this video.

This guy has a problem, but if he's gonna be sent away and put on a list for 5 minutes of someone's kid almost nekkid on a bearskin rug, there are more problems out there.

4. And a previous article plus TV news stories said his videos were fine
No evidence of wrongdoing. So how did they get a warrant to search his house?

I wonder if he had a record and the cop recognized him. Nothing else makes sense here.

3. Phill Kline
Former Attorney General of Kansas

Abortion controversy
In 2003, Kline began investigating possible cases of child rape and illegal partial-birth and late-term abortions. In doing so, Kline requested the medical records of 90 women and girls who either gave birth to a child or had an abortion. As of October 2006, the 90 subpoenaed medical records remain sealed.

On December 21, 2006, Kline charged abortion provider Dr. George Tiller with more than 30 misdemeanors, most involving abortions Tiller allegedly performed on minors. But just hours after the charges were unsealed, a Sedgwick County judge threw them out "at the request of Sedgwick County District Attorney Nola Foulston, who said her office had not been consulted by Kline." However, on June 28, 2007, a 19-count indictment was unexpectedly filed against Tiller by Kline's successor, Paul Morrison.

In a related matter, Kline was named a defendant in a suit brought in the United States District Court for the District of Kansas challenging a state law requiring "doctors and other professionals" to report "all consensual underage sexual activity as sexual abuse." On April 18, 2006, Judge J. Thomas Marten agreed and issued a permanent injunction, ruling that such a policy was contrary to state law.

In 2006, Operation Rescue and Phil Kline claimed that an alleged rapist was captured with the help of abortion clinic medical records subpoenaed as a result of Kline's investigation. The District Attorney who prosecuted Estrada challenged Operation Rescue's claims, stating that Kline and the records had no involvement in the prosecution.

7. A grand jury just cleared Dr Tiller last week
Philll is a frootloop of ultimate proportions. He was appointed our DA by the fundie GOP leaders in our county when he lost his re-election as state AG. In a bizarre twist, he was beat by our DA who had been a Republican but switched to Democrat to run for state AG. So he and Phillll traded jobs.

Then a year later, the state AG was caught up in a sex scandal and forced to resign.

Philll said he wouldn't run for re-election then decided yes he would. Al he has done in 18 months is pester Planned Parenthood. He is about to lose a high profile murder case on a silly technicality.

Here he is sounding like a preacher at a recent local GOP event:

5. Geez, i was doing the same thing on the 4th
i was happily snapping away at kids on rides at the fair. Then I thought, oops, very dangerous to do that any more. So then I shot photos of rides sans kids.

Last year I was shooting kids decorating pumpkins at our local harvest festival and had a parent question my use of the photos. I find this a very sad situation.
