Publisher of Los Angeles Times Resigns Amid Steep Cuts at Paper
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Times said Monday that its publisher David D. Hiller had resigned amid deep staff and production cuts.
An article posted Monday on the newspaper’s Web site said that Mr. Hiller was leaving after 21 months in the job.
The Tribune Company, which owns The Times and other media assets, has not yet named a successor to Mr. Hiller. His predecessor, Jeffrey Johnson, was ousted in late 2006 when he balked at trimming newsroom staff, also to cut costs.
The paper plans to cut 250 positions, including 150 in the print and online news departments, and reduce its weekly page count by 15 percent. Some sections will be eliminated and stories are to run shorter.
Earlier on Monday, the editor of The Chicago Tribune, Ann Marie Lipinski, announced her resignation after seven years in the top post at the paper.
