UBS vows to expose tax-cheat
Geoff Elliott, Washington correspondent | July 19, 2008

UBS, the world's largest private banking group, stunned the financial world yesterday when it shelved all its offshore banking services for US residents and appeared to rip up the traditional Swiss franchise of secrecy, saying it was co-operating with the US's tax authorities to expose tax cheats.

Caught up in the same document sweep from the LGT Bank in Liechtenstein that exposed the private banking dealings of Australia's Frank Lowy, a UBS executive fronted a congressional inquiry in Washington DC and announced a stunning about-face.

"I am here today to make it absolutely clear that UBS genuinely regrets any compliance failures that may have occurred," said Mark Branson, UBS's Zurich-based chief financial officer of global wealth services.

"We have decided to exit entirely the business in question," he said of questionable banking services for US residents. "That means UBS will no longer provide offshore banking or security services to US residents through our bank branches."

16. Sunday Russia signed an oil deal with Iran

TEHRAN, July 13 (RIA Novosti) - Russian energy giant Gazprom and Iran's Ministry of Petroleum will sign on Sunday a memorandum of cooperation in the oil and gas sphere, an Iranian deputy oil minister said.

"Interaction between Iran and Russia in all spheres and especially in the energy sphere is very wide. We expect to further broaden this cooperation in the future," Hossein Noghrehkar Shirazi said.

Shirazi said a series of discussions would precede the signing of the cooperation memorandum.

Iran ranks fourth in terms of crude reserves after Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Kuwait, as well as fourth in terms of oil production after Saudi Arabia, the United States and Russia. Iran's proven gas reserves total more than 28 trillion cubic meters.

3399994, U.S. to establish presence in Tehran

Source: Guardian (UK) Confirmed by CNN

LONDON (Reuters) - The United States will announce in the next month that it plans to establish a diplomatic presence in Tehran for the first time in 30 years, a British newspaper said on Thursday.

In a front-page report, the Guardian said Washington would open a U.S. interests section in the Iranian capital, halfway towards opening an embassy.

The unsourced report by the newspaper's Washington correspondent said: "The Guardian has learned that an announcement will be made in the next month to establish a U.S. interests section in Tehran, a halfway house to setting up a full embassy.

"The move will see US diplomats stationed in the country."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After 30 years of no contact the United States is now dramatically reversing its course and will quickly speed up its rapproachment with Iran.

In a stunning reversal of the neocon hardline position, the Bush administration is going ahead with not only infrequent contacts and other incremental steps but has confirmed a report that it will be opening a low level office in Iran with American diplomats posted there.

IMHO this is reversal of Cheney and the neocon hold on power and signals that Gates has been able to restore traditional State and Defense Department roles that previous White Houses have all had. It also indicates that Rice has evidently tired of the neo con ideology and is moving to make the State Department an actual part of the government.

It also reflects an increasing independent roll (as intended) of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

These combined movements work to enhance the policy objectives of Obama and completely undermine the militaristic drama of the McCain campaign.

4. Watch the weekend news - it will be dull as heck - because they are not going
to cover any of this

since Rove is involved
since Urosevich is involved
since their hotshot web and IT guy is under the gun for setting up the spy system at the House of Representatives
since Gramm is involved
since many investors whose names we may learn about are on the list coming from Switzerland or Liechtenstein
since McCain cannot be criticized

from the clerk who pilfered them.

Italy actually published the names of their evaders.

20. Yes --he'll be busy doing damage control on his own sleazy business
first things first yanno? His wife was deep deep into the Enron scandal and this scandal has the potential to upset people even more than that one. If the names come out you will see religious, political, business, sports, and other celebrities & uber wealthy people being prosecuted. Or maybe not.

It WILL take some time, unfortunately.

21. This morning on Washington Journal a wingnut called in, laughing maniacally
saying "It is not a timeline!! Ha!ha! It is NOT a timeline!! Hahaha..."
Goober can't figure out what a "time horizon" is, I guess. I went over to Fox to see how they were going to explain that a time horizon is not a time line. They were talking about the New Yorker cover. Heady days are ahead, if only we weren't flat on our a$$, with groceries going up hourly. I am working on my hay bale garden today. Just check in to see how bad the news is.
