I mean, Carter was very unpopular in summer of 1980, did Kennedy come close to getting the nomination that year?....Who knows if he would have beat Reagan, but he sure would have faired better than JC....Even if Carter won the primaries, there could have been a brokered convention, yes? - I'm sure many party leaders knew Carter was in trouble, & Kennedy could have at least made it a contest if he ended up being the Democratic nomninee...

I guess I'm just curious as to how close was Kennedy to being the nominee in 1980?...

1. Not terribly close
Carter had close to a 2-1 delegate advantage by the time of the convention, but Kennedy didn't concede until the very end.

2. Carter
was actually ahead in most polls until after the second debate. It was that one that was the real killer for Carter. If Reagan had a second debate like the first one, Carter would have been re-elected.

4. If the press hadn't insisted that Reagan won the debates, you should say
I thought Carter was impressive in the debates and Reagan was a fool.

6. The Monday before the election
all three evening newscasts (ABC, CBS and NBC) did long "retrospectives" on the one year anniversary of the Iranian Hostage Crisis. These dredged up all of the feelings of anger and frustration that the Country had felt over the last year and doomed any chance Carter had

of "There you go again" and the corporate media treated it as if that alone should be a win in a debate?

5. As I recall it wasn't real close
But to me the big thing was that Ted's heart didn't really seem to be into it. Which I always thought seemed rational seeing as what had been done to his brothers after they had tried to make a real difference in how we are governed.

7. I voted for Ted in our May primary

Iran saying there was a new chance of Carter negotiating the hostages home hurt too. People remembered Nixon and the "Peace with Nam" a few weeks before he won again in 72.
